Motivation can be defined as the driving force behind all the


actions of individuals. To become an effective employee of the
organization, one must be able to become highly motivated
individual.
METHODOLOGIES

The course will apply the following methodologies and instructional


techniques.
• Powerpoint presentation and trainer/facilitator guided discussion.
• Educational video presentation.

WHAT IS MOTIVATION?

Motivation (1904) a psychological use, “inner or social stimulus for action”.

Motivation comes from Latin word “movere” which means “to move”.

Motivation can be defined as the driving force behind our actions, fueled by our desire for
something.
Motivation can be defined as an internal state or condition, sometimes described as a
need, desire, or want that serves to activate or energize behavior and give it direction.
(Kleinginna, 1981)

Motivation may be defined as the process of activating behavior, sustaining it, and
directing it toward a particular goal. Motivation moves people to act and accomplish.
(Medina, 2011)

1. Physiological motives
2. Psychological motives
3. Ego-Integrative motives
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF MOTIVATION

1. Incentives motivate learning.


2. Both affiliation and approval are strong motivators.
3. Many behaviors result from a combination of motives.
CHARACTERISTICS OF MOTIVATION

1. Motivation is a psychological concept.


2. Motivation affects the whole individual, not part of him/her.
3. Motivation is never an unending process.
4. Non-fulfilment of basic needs make a man sick.
5. Goals are motivators.
6. Motivation is a complex phenomenon.
7. Motivation is different from satisfaction, inspiration, and manipulation.
KEY ELEMENTS OF MOTIVATION

1. Intensity- refers to the level of effort provided by the employee in the attempt to achieve
the goal assigned to them.

2. Direction- relates to what an individual chooses to do when he is confronted with a


number of possible choices.

3. Persistence- a dimension of motivation which measures how long a person can maintain
effort to achieve the organization’s goals.

1. Motivation through job design


2. Organizational behavior modification
3. Motivation through recognition and pride
4. Motivation through financial incentives
MOTIVATION THROUGH JOB DESIGN

Job design may be defined as the way the elements in the job are organized.

3 CONCEPTS IN DESIGNING JOBS


• Job enrichment
• Job characteristics model
• Job crafting
Job enrichment refers to the practice of building motivating factors like responsibility, achievement and recognition into job
content.

An enriched job has any or all of the following characteristics:


• Direct feedback
• Client relationship
• New learning
• Control over method
• Control over scheduling
• Unique experience
• Direct communication authority
• Control over resources
• Personal accountability
Job characteristics model refers to the method of job design that focuses on the task and
interpersonal demands of a job.

• Skills variety
• Task identity
• Task significance
• Autonomy
• Feedback
Job crafting refers to the physical and mental changes workers make the task or
relationship aspect of their jobs.

The common types of job crafting are:


• Changing the number and type of job tasks
• Changing the interaction with others on the job
• Changing one’s view of the job
ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION

Organizational behavior modification is actually the application of reinforcement theory


in motivating people at work.

Reinforcement theory may briefly defined as the contention that behavior is determined by
its consequences.
Organizational behavior modification program consists of a five-step problem solving
model.

1. Identifying critical behaviors


2. Developing baseline data
3. Identifying behavioral consequences of performance
4. Developing and implementing an intervention strategy
5. Evaluating performance improvement
MOTIVATION THROUGH RECOGNITION AND PRIDE

Recognition is a natural human need and it is a strong motivator.

Pride is also a motivator, but one that is intrinsic. The feeling satisfies the need for self- esteem and
self-fulfillment.

Feedback is essential part of recognition.

Praise is the most powerful forms of recognition.

• Performance and profit related pay
• Skill/competency based pay

SELF MOTIVATION AT WORK

• Self motivation is a power that drives us to keep moving ahead. It encourage continuous
learning and success, whatever be the scenario.

• Self motivation is a primary means of realizing our goals and progressing. It is basically
related to our inventiveness in setting dynamic goals for ourselves, and our faith that we
possess the required skills and competencies for achieving those challenging goals.
WAYS/TECHNIQUES FOR SELF-MOTIVATION

1. Communicate and talk to get motivated.


2. Remain optimistic.
3. Discover your interest area.
4. Self-acknowledgement.
5. Monitor and record your success.
6. Assist, support and motivate others.
7. Encourage learning.
8. Break your bigger goals into smaller goals.
HIGHER MOTIVATIONS

• Creativity and compassion may be found at the other end of spectrum that may be
considered as higher motivation.

• Creative activities can also give satisfaction.

• It is not just “maintenance and enhancement of self” but transcendence of self, a loss of
self that paradoxically leads to expansion of self.
