used to convey various times,


sequences, states, and
conditions.
Past tense verbs tell about an
action that has already
happened.
• Ben gave me a pencil.
• The girl walked to school.
• We sang at the concert.
Present tense verbs tell about
an action that is happening
now.
• Mark eats the apple.
• She is a good student.
• Kay climbs the tree.
Future tense verbs tell about
an action that is going to
happen using the helping verb
“will.”
• Hank will pet the cat.
• She will find a seat.
• Lin will buy a bike.

Progressive tense verbs show an
ongoing action at some point in
time. It shows an action still in
progress by using –ing verbs.

Past progressive tense shows an
ongoing action that took place in the
past.
You form this verb tense by using the
“to be” verb was or were + an –ing
verb.
• Ben was talking to you.
• They were talking to you.
PRESENT
Present progressive tense shows an
ongoing action that is taking place right
now.
You form this verb tense by using the “to
be” verb am, is, or are + an –ing verb.

• I am talking to you.
• Ben is talking to you.
• They are talking to you.
FUTURE
Future progressive tense shows an
ongoing action that is going to happen.

You form this verb tense by using the “to


be” verb will be + an –ing verb.
• I will be talking to you.
• Ben will be talking to you.
• They will be talking to you.

Perfect tense verbs tell the order
in which things happened, or

PAST
Past perfect verbs express that an

PRESENT
Present perfect verbs express that an
action occurred at an unspecified time
in the past.
You form this verb tense by using have
or has + past tense verb.

The city has built several


schools this year.
FUTURE
Future perfect verbs express that an
action will occur before another event
in the future.
You form this verb tense by using will
have + past tense verb.
By the end of the year, the city
will have built several schools.
