WHAT IS
PRENATAL CARE?
• Prenatal Care is the care of the woman during
pregnancy to achieve a healthy mother and a health
baby by an obstetrician or a midwife.

• Prenatal Care allows the doctor or midwife to identify


and treat potential health problems early to prevent
complications during pregnancy.
*GOALS OF PRENATAL CARE:

1. SAFETY of the mother.


2. PREPARE mother for labor and
lactation.
3. EARLY DETECTION and TREATMENT
of High-Risk conditions.
5. REDUCE Maternal and Infant
MORTALITY, and REDUCE
PREMATURITY.
• PRENATAL VISITS

First prenatal visit: 6 weeks AOG

6-28 weeks (2-7mos): every month

29-36 weeks (7-9mos): every 2 weeks

36 up to delivery: every week


*40% of mothers who do not have prenatal care lose their baby 28
days after delivery.

1. High Blood Pressure

2. Diabetes

3. Past surgeries

4. Previous Hospitalization
• SUPPLEMENTS DURING PREGNANCY:

1. Folic acid

2. Calcium

3. Omega 3 (DHA/EPA)

4. Ferrous sulfate

5. Vitamin D3
• DUE DATE:
240 completed days of pregnancy OR 40 weeks

• 37-42 weeks: normal time in giving birth

• Pregnant patients with medical concerns: should coordinate


with your OB
PRENATAL WORK-UP:

• FIRST PRENATAL CHECK-UP:


1. Ultrasound at 1st trimester - Heartbeat at 6 -
13weeks
2. CBC with platelet count and blood typing
3. Urinalysis
4. HBsAg
5. Blood glucose (FBS or 75gm OGTT)
6. VDRL and HIV
• at 5 MONTHS:

1. Pelvic ultrasound for:


- congenital anomaly scan
- cervical length
- gender

• at 7 MONTHS:
1. Vaccines: Influenza, Tetanus toxoid, Hep B vaccine, COVID
19 vaccine (with clearance from OB), Pneumococcal vaccine
2. 75gm OGTT
• at 32-36 weeks AOG

1. GBS screening at 36 weeks


2. Ultrasound (Biometry/ Pelvic ultrasound)

• at 37-40 weeks AOG:


1. Weekly internal examination
• 2. Advise walking exercises
DANGER SIGNS DURING PREGNANCY

1. Severe headaches

2. Continuous vomiting

3. Abdominal pain

4. Fever

5. Blurring of vision
6. Decreased Fetal Movement

7. Vaginal Bleeding

8. Leaking Bag of Water

9. Painful urination

10. Swelling of the feet/


hands/ face
• NUTRITION DURING PREGNANCY:

1. Small fish (low in mercury)


2. Fruits and Vegetables
3. Avoid uncooked meat (sushi, sashimi, kilawin) and
unpasteurized dairy products
4. Avoid alcoholic drinks, sugary beverage (softdrinks,
milktea, iced tea)
5. Avoid HERBAL products
6. Limit coffee intake - 200mg/day (equal to 2 bars of plain
chocolate, or 1 can of cola drink)
