INTRODUCTION

Nearly every incident of injury or property damage arising from


horseplay starts with innocent intent to “bend the rules” for the
sake of fun. But in too many situations, horseplay occurs without
any consideration paid to the hazards posed by the surrounding
environment or behaviour itself. This hidden danger leads to
unexpected and sometimes tragic results.
DEFINITION
Horseplay can be defined as an unsafe act or boisterous play that
can lead to injury.
This act is normally done “all in the name of fun”
With no intention of hunting or harming one another, although
injuries may occur and it can also lead to property damage and
even fatalities.
EXAMPLES OF HORSEPLAY IN A WORKPLACE
These are some of the examples of horseplay
• Running ,chasing and pushing of your colleague.
• Throwing objects or tools at your fellow worker.
• Using your hand to stop a rotating ceiling fan.
• Speeding or racing around with heavy machineries
• Unauthorized competitions/contest.
CAUSES OF HORSPLAY
• Boredom or lack of engagement
• Peer pressure
• Lack of understanding or awareness
• Testing boundaries
RISKS AND CONSEQUENCES OF HORSEPLAY
• Slips trips and falls: horseplay can create hazardous condition such as
slippery surfaces that can lead to falls and injuries.
• Cuts and bruises: roughhousing and pranks that involve throwing
objects can result in cut, bruises and other injuries.
• Property damage: horseplay can cause damage to property which can
be costly to repair.
• Decreased productivity: horseplay can get workers distracted from
their job, resulting to time wastage and low productivity
WAYS OF PREVENTING HORSEPLAY IN THE WORKPLACE
It is the responsibility of the employee to prevent these as follow;
• Don’t initiate it
• Don’t get pressured into participating in it
• When you see horseplay ,try to stop it. If you cant, report it to your
supervisor or the safety officer in charge.
CONCLUSION
What start as harmless fun could end up having a disastrous
consequences, So keep horseplay away from the workplace.
