Law of Interaction

3rd Law of Motion

Newton’s 3rd Law of the Law of
Interaction states that whenever one
object exerts a force on the second
object, the second object exerts an
equal and opposite force on the first
object.
Newton’s 3 Law states that “If a body A exerts a
rd

force FAB on body B, then B exerts a force FBA on A,

so
FAB = -FBA.
Forces occur in pairs
 The two forces in a pair
are called action and
reaction.
 Anytime you have one,
you also have the other.
 If you know the strength of
one you also know the
strength of the other since
both forces are always
equal.
Forces always
occur in pairs
called action-
reaction
forces.
Forces occur in pairs
 The astronauts working on the space station have a serious
problem when they need to move around in space: There is
nothing to push on.
 One solution is to throw something opposite the direction you
want to move.
Action-
reaction
forces are
equal in
magnitude.
Action-reaction
forces act in
opposite
directions.
Action-
reaction
forces do not
cancel each
other out.
The Earth pulls
down on you with
a gravitational
force that you call
your weight. Do
you pull up on the
Earth with the
same amount of
force?

The effects of action-reaction

forces (Law of Interaction) on
different masses are explained
by the Law of Acceleration;
acceleration of objects may
seem negligible considering
their huge masses, holding
force constant.
If the forces that act on the
bullet and the recoiling
gun from which it is fired
are equal in magnitude,
why do the bullet and the
gun have very different
accelerations?

Application in Locomotion
 Jets,planes, and
helicopters push air.
 In a helicopter, the
blades of the propeller
are angled such that
when they spin, they
push the air molecules
down.
Identify the action-reaction forces in the following situations:
1. rocket launching in the air
2. car driving along the road
3. archer pulling an arrow on the bow
4. ball falling to the ground
5. fish swimming in the pond
6. helicopter lifting up
