WHAT IS ETHICS

HISTORY OF ETHICS
Ethics came from a latin word “Ethicus” & Greek word “Ethos” means
“character”
In 1913 the code of ethics was adopted

CODE OF ETHICS FOCUSED TOWARDS 3 CONSTITUENTS:
1. PUBLIC
FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES
CIVIL ENGINEERS UPHOLD AND ADVANCE THE INTEGRITY, HONOR AND DIGNITY OF THE CIVIL
ENGINEERING PROFESSION BY:
• USING THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL FOR THE ENHANCEMENT OF HUMAN WELFARE AND THE
ENVIRONMENT;
• BEING HONEST AND IMPARTIAL AND SERVING WITH FIDELITY THE PUBLIC, THEIR
EMPLOYERS/EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS;
CANONS OF ETHICS
A. Civil Engineers shall hold the safety, health and welfare of the public;
B. Civil Engineers shall perform services exclusively in their field of competence;
C. Civil Engineers shall publicize criticisms in an appropriate way;
D. Civil Engineers shall act professionally;
E. Civil Engineers shall compete fairly;
F. Civil Engineers shall act in such a way that they enhance the honor, dignity, and integrity
of the profession; and
G. Civil Engineers shall provide continuous professional services even for the later
generations.
CIVIL ENGINEERING CODE OF ETHICS
CANON A. CIVIL ENGINEERS SHALL HOLD THE SAFETY, HEALTH AND WELFARE OF
THE PUBLIC.
• Safety, health, and welfare should be determined in accordance with engineering judgment/s.
• The signing and approval or sealing of design documents shall only be done in accordance
with engineering standards.
• Consequences shall be known by clients in case that the professional judgments of the civil
engineers are overruled by some factors.
CIVIL ENGINEERING CODE OF ETHICS
• Acceptance of tasks which require educational qualifications and experiences may be done.
• No approval or signing of engineering plans or documents shall be made when the lack of
competence is identified.
• The expressions of opinions SHOULD ONLY be done with the support of the facts.
• Civil engineers shall act professionally when facing their clients and/or employers.
• No acceptance of compensations from other parties for the same project unless agreed by
such.
• As government employees, civil engineers shall not participate in any solicited activities.
CIVIL ENGINEERING CODE OF ETHICS
• In case of a prediction of an unsuccessful project, civil engineers shall inform their employers
in accordance with their knowledge.
• No acceptance of professional employment outside the regular work without the permission
of the employers.
CIVIL ENGINEERING CODE OF ETHICS
• No acceptance of any solicit whether directly or indirectly particularly coming from political
contribution that might ruin the reputation.
• In case that the professional judgments of civil engineers are not compromised, they may
request professional commissions on a contingency basis.
CIVIL ENGINEERING CODE OF ETHICS
Advertisements should be not be done in a manner that may ruin the dignity of the
profession. Some examples of such are as follows:
i. Professional cards in recognized, dignified publications;
ii. Brochures, based on facts, which describe experience, facilities, personnel and
capacity to render service;
iii. Display advertisements in recognized dignified businesses and professional
publication;
iv. Statement that shows the names of the engineers and/or the name of the firm(s)
involved;
v. Authorized descriptive articles for the lay or technical press; and
vi. Permission that grants the use of engineers’ names.
CIVIL ENGINEERING CODE OF ETHICS
• Civil engineers should not act in a manner derogatory to the honor, integrity, or dignity of the
profession to be engaged in acts of fraudulence or unethical activities.
CIVIL ENGINEERING CODE OF ETHICS
• Civil engineers should keep their current specialty fields by engaging in professional
activities.
