At the end lesson, the students should be able to:

 identify various language registers used in various speech contexts


through an interactive board work;
 distinguish the use of various language registers through a group
discussion;
 relate the lesson on language registers to students’ day-to-day
speaking engagements through a group reporting; and
• demonstrate effective use of language registers in speech contexts
through a short video presentation.

Language Registers

•Register, in linguistics, is used to


indicate degrees of formality in
language use.
Language Registers

• Language Register is the level of


formality with which you speak.
Different situations and people call
for different registers.
Types of Language Registers

•Casual •Formal
•Intimate •Consultative
•Frozen
Casual

• This is informal language used by peers and


friends. Past experience with that person.
Slang, vulgarities, and colloquialisms are
normal. This is “group” language. One (1)
must be member to engage in this register.
Casual

Examples: • Talk with teammates


• Talking with friends • Chats and emails
• Personal letter to a • Personal blogs
friend
Intimate

• This communication is private.


Language shared between couples,
twins, very close friends. It is reserved
for close family members or intimate
people.
Intimate

Examples: Girlfriend

Frozen

• This style of communications rarely


or never changes. It is “frozen” in
time and content. It is also called
static register.
Frozen

Formal

• This language is used in formal


settings and is one-way in nature.
This use of language usually follows
a commonly accepted format.
Formal

Examples: • Sermons
• Presentations • Speeches
• Academic Paper • Announcements
• Essays in school • Interviews
Consultative

• This is a standard form of communication. Users


engage in a mutually accepted structure of
communications. Two-way communication used
in conversation with professional discourse is a
good example. It also shows no past experience
with that person.
Consultative

Examples: • Talking with lawyer


• Doctor and patient • Counselor and client
• Adults at work • Talking to a love
• Teachers with students expert
