Objectives:
• Understand the concept of
Codominance in Genetics
• Solve genetic problems regarding
codominance using Punnett square.
• Apply knowledge of Codominance
in Agriculture and in Medicine
WHAT’S IN?

• When inheritance is by Codominance, heterozygous

individual will have two phenotypes - a combination of the
phenotypes encoded by the two alleles.
• For example, RW plants will have flowers that are both red
and white

What’s New
Codominance
Pattern of inheritance were both alleles are
expressed equally in the phenotype of the
heterozygote.

Codominance in Blood Types

The Alleles of a pair, which are able to

express themselves independently when present
together in hybrid are called codominant alleles.
CODOMINANC
Codominance is a form of dominanceEwherein the alleles of a gene pair in a
heterozygote are fully expressed or both expressed.

An example codominance is roan fur in cattle as shown in Figure 2. Cattle

can be red (RR = all red hairs),
white (WW = all white hairs), or
roan (RW = red & white hairs together).

Problem:
A student is conducting a genetics experiment involving snapdragon
flowers. They have a red snapdragon plant with the genotype RR and a
white snapdragon plant with the genotype WW. They plan to cross these
two plants to study flower color inheritance.

a) What are the genotypes of the parent plants?

b) Use a Punnett square to predict the genotypes and phenotypes of the

offspring. Assume that flower color is determined by a single gene with
codominance.

c) What will the flowers of the offspring look like in terms of color?

second cheer to support their
representatives.
3.Possible Group Scores: 5 for Excellent

Give this some
Thought….
Why is codominance considered a non mendelian
pattern of inheritance?

• This pattern of inheritance directly

contradicts Mendel's law of
dominance, as neither allele is
dominant over the other. Instead,
both alleles are fully expressed.
In what subject do we usually
solve numerical problems like
probability and percentage?

MATHEMATICS
Today, we also did a lot of
reading and worked on some
vocabulary words. What
subject was this language
taught in?

LET’S
ELABORATE
Scenario 1 : Chicken Breeding

If you're a poultry farmer aiming to produce unique-

looking chickens, you might choose to mate a white-
feathered chicken (WW) with a black-feathered chicken
(BB). The resulting chicks (BW) will showcase
codominance, with both black and white feathers.
Scenario 2: Dairy Cow Breeding

Suppose you work on a dairy farm and are tasked with

breeding cows for milk production and unique coat
patterns. You have a white-coated cow (WW) and a black-
coated cow (BB). If you mate these two cows, their calves
(BW) will inherit both brown and black coat colors in a
codominant fashion.
Scenario 3: Blood Transfusion Compatibility

In a medical context, understanding codominance is crucial for blood

transfusion compatibility. Let's say you're a nurse preparing to
administer a blood transfusion to a patient with blood type AB. Since
blood type AB is a result of codominance (IAIB), you know that this
patient can receive blood from both type A and type B donors without
any adverse reactions. This knowledge helps ensure safe and effective
blood transfusions.
LET’S
EVALUATE
five-item quiz to test your knowledge of codominance:
Question 1: What is codominance in genetics?
a) When one allele is dominant over the other.
b) When two alleles are both expressed in an individual.
c) When two alleles cancel each other out.

Question 2: In the ABO blood group system, what blood

type results from codominance?
a) Blood type O
b) Blood type A
c) Blood type AB
Question 3: If a black-feathered chicken (BB) mates with a
white-feathered chicken (WW), what kind of offspring do
they produce, thanks to codominance?
a) All black-feathered offspring
b) All white-feathered offspring
c) Offspring with both black and white feathers

In a codominant gene pair for coat color, one allele codes for
black fur, and another allele codes for white fur. If a black-
coated cat (BB) is mated with a white-coated cat (WW), what
will be the coat color of their offspring?
a) Black b) White c) Black and white
Question 5: In codominance, what
happens to two different alleles at a
single gene locus?
a) One allele becomes invisible.
b) Both alleles are equally expressed.
c) One allele completely replaces the
other.
Assignment:

Write a brief essay explaining what codominance is

and how it differs from other forms of inheritance,
such as incomplete dominance and recessive
inheritance. Provide real-world examples of
codominance and explain how they manifest in traits
or diseases.

Requirements:
A minimum of 10 sentences. At least two
examples of codominant traits or alleles. Proper
citation of sources if used.
