Region 8 - Eastern Visayas Region

This chapter presents the major tourist destination areas of Eastern Visayas
Region. The major discussions will be on access, health and safety issues,
geograpical characteristics, major attractions, gastronomy, and distinctive
cultural attributes of the region related to the development and promotion of
tourism in the Philippines.
Objectives

At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:


1. identify the different major attractions, activities accommodations, and cultural
highlights in the provinces within the Eastern Visayas Region;
2. create different tour packages that carry different types of tourism activities
within the region; and
3. assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the region in terms
of the 4 As of tourism.
Introduction
The province of Samar, occupying the southwestern part of Samar
Island, is a rugged land with bountiful waters on the west and low mountain
ranges on the east. Caught between mountain and sea, Samar is no stranger
to rain, which it experiences in varying degrees for the most part of the year.

F. Festival and Special Events
Samar
• Alimango Festival - ( July 25 ) to promote the crab industry of the town of Sta. Margarita,
the festival features the courtship dance between female and male alimango.

• Mayaw - Mayaw Festival - ( May 10 ) a thanksgiving celebration the depicts the ancient
ritual during the Pre - Spanish time of the rice production hub of the province.

• Manager Festival - ( August 24 ) in honor of the patron saint of Catbalogan City, the
miracolous St. Bartholomewm, believed to keep the rich marine resources in Maqueda Bay
G. Major Cultural Groups

Waray and Cebuano are the major cultural groups in the region. The
islands of Samar and Leyte are home to the Warays. Wet rice intensive cultivation,
production of copra and domestic fishing economy sustain the basic population.
The Warays are highly resilient as they have attuned their lives to the fact that their
homes lie in the paths of Pacific typhoons.
I. Languages and Dialects

Filipino and English are widely spoken. Dialects dominant in the region are
Waray - waray, Cebuano, Boholano, Lineyte - Samarnon, and Inabaknon.
H. Major industries

Major industry revenue sources are manufacturing and wholesale and


retail trade and services. Mining, farming, fishing, and tourism contribute
greatly to the economy. Cebu’s industrial and eco - tourism activities. In the
long term, Leyte is planned to be the region’s industrial hub.
