Separating Mixtures

ENLIST ON WHAT BASES

SEPARATION CAN TAKE PLACE
Separating Techniques
Mix things up
Fe S

• Get a mortar and pestle

• Put two spatulas of Sulphur granules in it and grind them up
• Now add two spatulas of Iron to the Sulphur
• Use the spatula to mix it all together

You have made a mixture – can we separate it? How?

Separating a mixture
Fe
Put a magnet in a plastic bag and hold it over the
mixture

See how the Iron gets attracted to the magnet

S

Why does the sulphur not stick to the magnet?

Separating other mixtures
 Rice and pasta shapes
 Paperclips and sawdust
 Flour and rice
 Sand and water
 Oil and water
Definition of a mixture!
A mixture is made up of 2 or more
different atoms. They are not
chemically joined and so can be easily
separated.
E.g. iron and sulphur

salt and sand and Water.

 (Hint: you may need more than one

process)
Thinking Practically…
How would you separate the following mixtures of sand , salt and water?

1. Describe technique for separation

2. Describe why you chose this technique
RESEACH TASK

• WHY DOES NAIL VARNISH NOT COME OFF IN WATER , BUT REMOVED
BY OTHER CHEMICALS?

• Water based paints is made by dissolving a pigment in water. Can you

identify the solute, solvent in this example
QUESTIONS:

EASY: Define and Identify the solute, solvents and solutions

Name any examples)

CHALLENGE:How would you get pure salt from sea water?

Describe the process in a formal method and give an
apparatus list.

PRETTY HARD: How would you be able to tell if a substance is

pure or not by heating it up? Explain what happens to the
bonds between particles of sugar when it is dissolved in water
