Reading is one of the most important skills that should be mastered by the students,
because it can improve their learning ability and general English proficiency.
Reading process includes three processes: (1) letter and word recognition, (2)
comprehension of concepts, and (3) reaction and assimilation of the new knowledge
with the reader’s past experience (Lapp and Flood).

There is purpose of learning descriptive text according to the syllabus of SMP Negeri
4 Palu, students are expected to be able to applying social functions, text structures,
and linguistic elements of oral and written transactional interaction texts that
involve the act of giving and asking for information regarding the whereabouts of
people, objects, animals, according to the context of its use.

While when researcher conducted preliminary observation at SMP Negeri 4 Palu,
many students still have problems when studying reading.

Some students' difficulties in reading:


• Lack of vocabulary
• Do not able to get the detail information
• Do not understand the meaning and do not gain the message from the text in
reading materials
The problems will cause a lack of students' ability to summarize and understand the
text.

So that, the purpose of learning descriptive text at SMP Negeri 4 Palu is not in
accordance with the reality that is happening.

Therefore, to overcome these problems the researcher proposes the idea of using
Line Webtoon which could be effective as a learning media to help students
overcome problems and enhancing their reading comprehension.

Line Webtoon is an online comic which presented many titles with different genres
of stories for free (Line me, 2019). With the use of Line Webtoon as a learning
media, it is hoped that this application can increasing students' reading
comprehension.

Can the implementation of Line Webtoon enhance reading comprehension of the


eight grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Palu?

OBJECTIVE OF THE RESEARCH


The objective of this research is to figure out whether or not the implementation of
Line Webtoon can enhance students’ reading comprehension of the eight grade
students of SMP Negeri 4 Palu.

Most of the students are lazy to read because they regard reading as a complex and
difficult English language skill and cannot understand the meaning of the text.
Hence, using Line Webtoon as a media in teaching reading comprehension could be
an appropriate and recommended media for the teachers to apply in the classroom
for the teaching and reading activity. This method is very easy to be conducted by
the teacher in the classroom, and learning reading comprehension can be more fun
(Setialis et al 2018).

The population of this research are Eight grade
The design in this research is quasi- students of SMP Negeri 4 Palu. The sample of
experimental design. this research are class VIII-A and VIII-B that
consist of 40 students.

RESEARCH VARIABLES
𝐎𝟏 = Pre-test for experimental group The variables in this research are independent
𝐎𝟐 = Post-test for experimental group and dependent variable. The independent
𝐎𝟑 = Pre-test for control group variable is Line Webtoon and the dependent
𝐎𝟒 = Post-test for control group variable is Students’ Reading Comprehension.

TECHNIQUE OF DATA COLLECTION
In this research the researcher will use pre-test, treatment, and post-test as a technique of data
collection. Data collection can be interpreted as research activities to collect field data necessary for
research and testing hypothesis (Narbuko and Achmadi 2010).

TECHNIQUE OF DATA ANALYSIS


The researcher will count the individual score by using the formula stated by Purwanto (2008). Next,
to count mean score of both groups, researcher will use the formula stated by Hatch and Farhady
(1982:55). After getting the mean score, the researcher will count the individual deviation of
students’ score in both groups. The formula is stated by Hatch and Farhady (1982:55). And then, the
researcher computes the sum of square deviation by using formula proposed by Arikunto
(2006:308). Lastly, in order to find out whether the result of the test is significance difference, the
researcher apply the formula proposed by Arikunto (2006:349).
