Process instrumentation diagram

and symbols
A Process and Instrumentation Diagram, known
as a P&ID, shows how process equipment is
connected and by the use of symbols, represents
flow directions, safety and control systems,
pressure ratings, and other key piping and
instrument details of a system.

• Basically, Process diagrams can be divided into
two major categories.
• 1. Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)
• 2. Process and Instrumentation Diagrams
(P&IDs).
1. Process Flow Diagram

• The process flow diagram also known as the

“flow sheet” is the first document that enables
a clear understanding of the process to be
controlled. It shows only the major equipment
without details. That means it shows the
crucial elements of the process such as pumps,
vessels, turbines, heaters, and columns in the
system.
Cont…
• Process flow diagrams (PFDs) are used in
chemical and process engineering. These
diagrams show the flow of chemicals and the
equipment involved in the process.
• We've broken them down into seven main
groups: equipment, piping, vessels, heat
exchangers, pumps, instruments, and valves.
2. Process and Instrument Diagram

• A Process and Instrument Diagram (P&ID)

includes more details than a PFD. It includes
major and minor flows, control loops and
instrumentation. P&ID is sometimes referred
to as a Piping and Instrumentation Diagram.
P&IDs are used by process technicians and
instrument and electrical, mechanical, safety,
and engineering personnel.
Piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID):

• Also known as “Process & instrumentation

diagram”.
• Detailed graphical representation of a process
including the hardware and software (i.e piping,
equipment, and instrumentation) necessary to
design, construct and operate the facility.
• A diagram which shows the interconnection of
process equipment and the instrumentation used
to control the process.

• In both diagrams arrows show the flow of
material and symbols show tanks, valves, and
other equipment. The symbols used vary
somewhat from organization to organization.
So you may see several different symbols that
all represent a motor
Cont…
• It displays all major equipment like tanks,
heat exchangers, pumps, piping details, and
also, instrumentation details like all pressure
temperature, flow instruments, control
valves, pressure safety valves, various meters,
and etc.
Purpose of P&ID
To show;
• Material flow
• Piping between various section
• Valve and direction of process flow
• Electrical equipment
• Communication links
Application area of P&IDs
• Oil Refinery
• Chemical Plant
• Paper Mill
• Cement Plant
Instrument symbols

• An instrument is a device that measures

—and sometimes controls—quantities
such as flow, temperature, angle, or
pressure. The instruments group houses
indicators, transmitters, recordings,
controllers, and elements.
P&ID Equipment Symbols

• The common P&ID equipment symbols are

organized into the following categories:
• Heat exchangers
• Pumps
• Vessel
• Storage tanks
• Reactors
• Distillation columns and etc.
1. Pump
• A pump is a device that uses suction or
pressure to raise, compress, or move fluids in
and out of other objects.
• This section is comprised of both pumps and
fans.
2. Heat Exchanger smbol
• A heat exchanger is a processing unit in which
steam is used to heat up a liquid material. The
P&ID diagram utilizes certain standard
symbols to represent the process units, the
instrumentation, and the process flow.
• A heat exchanger is a device that's designed to
efficiently transfer heat from different areas or
mediums. This category includes boilers,
condensers, and other heat exchangers.
3. Vessel symbols

• A vessel is a container that is used to store

fluid. It may also alter the characteristics of the
fluid during storage.
• The vessels category includes tanks, cylinders,
columns, bags, and other vessels.

4. Distillation column
• A distillation column is a tube that provides
surfaces on which condensations and
vaporizations can occur before the gas enters
the condenser in order to concentrate the
more volatile liquid in the first fractions and
the less volatile components in the later
fractions
PID Distillation Colum
5. Chemical reactor
• A chemical reactor is an enclosed volume in
which a chemical reaction takes place.
6. Piping symbols

• A pipe is a tube that transports fluid

substances. Piping can be made of various
materials, including metal and plastic. The
piping group is made up of one-to-many pipes,
multi-line pipes, separators, and other types of
piping devices.
LINES P&ID SYMBOLS
7. Valve symbols

• A valve regulates, directs, or controls the flow

of a fluid by opening, closing, or partially
obstructing passageways in a piping system.
This category includes orifices, and other
types of valves.
