DESIGN PROCESS AND
CONTEXTUALIZATION

Session - 5
AIM OF THE SESSION

To familiarize students with the basic concept of Design Thinking and Innovation.

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES

This Session is designed to:

• Understand the design thinking process.
• Assess the learning of students using breakout activities.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this session, you should be able to:

1. Understand the basics of design thinking process.
2. Identify the contextual problem keeping in mind the sustainable development goal.
Introduction to Design Thinking
 This stage is oriented towards understanding the intended
Empathize users and the problem from their viewpoint by observation,
engagement and immersion.
Define At this stage the insights discovered in empathize are
transformed to needs.
 Within the context of the problem statement, the team
Ideate generates many radical design alternative that explore the
solution space and identify the best solution.
At this stage, the best solution is made as a product with which
Prototype the team, users and others will experience and interact.
 Prototypes are placed into appropriate contexts of user’s lives
Test the goal of gathering thoughtful feedback, learning and
refining solutions.

THINGS YOU MUST KNOW

• Problem Definition in Design Thinking

 Know the goal and align the approach with the goal
 Identify the kind of problem that needs to be solved
• Contextualization
 Contextualization means adjusting a solution to the situation
 The situation (culture) in India requires affordable, sustainable,
sensitive, and understandable solutions

EXAMPLES
DESIGN THINKING
EXAMPLES
Braun/Oral B Electric Toothbrush
 In 2016, Braun and Oral B recruited the expertise of designers Kim Colin and Sam Hecht,
founders of the London-based design studio Industrial Facility, to create a smarter electric
toothbrush.
 variety of sophisticated data-tracking features
 a music player,
 to sense how well the user’s were brushing
 how sensitive their gums were.

 Suggestions:
 USB charging
 Easy replacement of brush heads.

 The result - boost sales and increase

customer loyalty.
Cultural Relevance (Time, Space and Environment)
According to human beings or according to country thought process's for a
same problem solution differs.
So we have to consider all aspects and find a solution for problem identified.

Don't press any buttons underwater!
Customer response : I've been trying to get into shape so I could start doing
triathlons -- athletic events composed of swimming, cycling and running. I
purchased a nice sport watch, a "Triathlon" model, so I could time myself in
the pool and confirm I was counting the laps correctly. After just a few
workouts, the watch filled up with water! I took it back and they happily
replaced it, saying that I must have accidentally pushed the buttons under
water!

The watch was water resistant to 100 m. I looked at the instruction booklet
that came with the watch. On the last page of the instructions was printed.
WARNING: TO MAINTAIN WATER-RESISTANCE, DO NOT PRESS ANY
BUTTONS UNDER WATER

Design Suggestion
A better solution would be to design the watch to allow the buttons to be
pressed while swimming, without ruining the water into the watch.
TYPES OF PROBLEMS: WHAT
NEEDS TO BE FIXED?
 Physical problem (health and age related)
 Logical problem (logical reasoning skills)
 Psychological problem (emotions and
mental health)
 Political problem (problems involving
political issues)
 Economic problem (Economy related
problems)
Breakout Group
Activity

2
What Kind of Solutions does India Need?
BREAKOUT GROUP ACTIVITY
• As a group, review the list of Indian conditions. For each condition, decide
what kind of solutions we need.
• Take 20 minutes. Be ready to explain the logic behind your answers.
• Example: Indian Condition: High Unemployment
Kind of Solution Needed: Labour-intensive solution
• Logic: If many Indians are unemployed, the solution should
take advantage of the large, available labour pool
Detailed Instructions for the Activity
Fill the slide. List a kind of solution that is required to satisfy each
condition on the list. DO NOT propose a particular solution. Just
mention a requirement for the eventual solution
1. One member of the group will display the slide.
2. Go down the list one condition at a time. Discuss as a group what
kind of solution would be required.
3. When you decide on the kind of solution required, one member
of the group will write down the logic, read it back to the group,
and edit it based on the group’s input.
4. Complete the slide in 20 minutes. Be ready to explain your logic.
Breakout Activity Rubrics:
• Response of the Group: 4 Marks
• Inclusion of given goal: 3 Marks
• Presentation/Output of Activity: 3 Marks
