INNOVATION FOR CHANGE

USING HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN

Assessment for Semester 2

MCQ TEST REFLECTIVE PROJECT

(IN CLASS) JOURNAL SHOWCASE
13TH JULY 2023 4TH AUGUST 2023 2ND WEEK OF SEP 2023
DAY 02
Basic Model of Design
The main purpose behind design-driven interventions is to
ignite change in some way.

How we do that is by looking at the current state and

moving towards the future state through a process of transformation.
Human Centered Design
Begins and ends with people.

It takes a user perspective

to explore and design new solutions
Not all problems are born equal…

SIMPLE COMPLICATED COMPLEX

It involves a few components It involves many components It involves many actors with
and actors and experts conflicting interests

Clear end state: we can tell when Clear end state: we can tell when No clear end state: new problems may
the problem is solved the problem is solved occur

Procedures to solve the problem Procedures to solve the problem Procedures to solve the problem are
involve a few simple and clear involve many steps and a unclear, not known, requires trials &
steps specific order error to see what works
Complex or Wicked Problems
Multiple possible problem definitions

Difficult to address and change with every attempt to address it

Many stakeholders with different values and priorities

Have causes and drivers that are interdependent

Filled with uncertainties and unknowns

Require multiple new solutions and impossible to predict if they work

Let’s discuss the issue
you want to work on
Pick:
• A challenge your team is familiar with that relates to your chosen theme
• A challenge that is complex (multiple actors and drivers, conflicting forces)
• An issue that directly affects citizens
HUMAN-CENTERED
SYSTEMS THINKING
VIDEO: Bringing a human-centered lens to systems thinking

The interconnectedness between different things that

eventually results in an experience
What is a system?
A set of things interconnected in such a way that they
produce their own pattern of behavior
over time.
What is a systems map?
A systems map is a visual representation of underlying
complexity that helps us identify insights in ways that
would not have been possible from a single perspective

A set of methods and tools to help us make sense of complex challenges, to reduce
the otherwise paralyzing mess into usable maps that help surface intervention points
to changing the system.
TOOL #1

ICEBERG MAP
Leverage points
The right places in a system where small, well-
focused actions can produce significant, enduring
improvements
Shallow leverage points
because changing events does not tend to change
the driving forces of the system

Deep leverage points

the deeper you intervene in the iceberg, the
larger the change you can make

To make long-term and deep change, the

root cause/s or driving element/s of the
system need to be addressed.
TOOL #2

ISSUE MAP
What is an issue map?
An ‘Issue Map’ allows a larger issue to be broken down into
smaller contributory problems or factors, covering social,
economic, institutional, political, technological and
environmental aspects of a particular issue.

It helps identify a more accessible entry point through which a

much larger issue can be tackled.
TOOL #3

MAPPING THE ISSUE

TOOL #4

EXPLORING THE PROBLEM

TOOL #5

DEFINING THE PROBLEM

TOOL #6

USER JOURNEY MAP

The User Journey Map enables you to map the experience journey of your user – the positives
and the negatives.

These experiences are intangible and mapping helps to make them visible. It helps to build empathy
with users and develop a shared understanding across stakeholders.
