BEGINS
WHAT IS THE PROTESTANT
REFORMATION?
• Protestant Reformation – a religious movement in the 1500s that
split the Christian church in western Europe and led to the
establishment of a number of new churches
• Renaissance gets people to question long held beliefs
• People were upset with the Church’s
– Financial Corruption
– Abuse of Power
– Immorality
LANGUAGE BARRIERS
• Most uneducated people didn’t
understand Latin, but knew the local
common language or “vernacular”
– Almost all Bibles were written in
Latin at this time
– Church was conducted in Latin
– Church officials interpreted
religious texts for followers of
religion

INDULGENCES
❖A way for someone to get their sins
forgiven and get to heaven easier
❖Usually acquired by praying or
doing good deeds
❖Between 1100s – 1500s the Church
sold indulgences, so people could
pay to have their sins forgiven
INQUISITION
• In the 13th century, church officials
began to seek out and punish
people guilty of heresy.
• Heresy: Religious beliefs that go
against the church
• Attempt by Spanish monarchs,
Ferdinand and Isabella, to get rid
of non Christians in their kingdom
MARTIN LUTHER
• Luther was a German monk
• One of the leaders of the
Protestant Reformation
• Posts the 95 Theses on a
Church door in Germany
– His criticisms of the
Church
– Didn’t want to break away
from the Church, wanted to

• Luther’s criticisms of the Church
– Indulgences = unethical
– Pope has too much power
– Wealth of the Church
– Believed you get into heaven by
having faith in God
• Church taught that one gets into
heaven through good works

• Johannes Gutenberg
– Develops printing press in Europe
– Could produce books quick and
cheap
• Helps spread new ideas throughout
Europe

– His ideas still spread and gain
popularity

Christianity begin (Protestant

• King of England-Tudors
• Best known for having 6 wives
(and beheading several of them)
• Creates the Church of England
so he can get a divorce
– His wife couldn’t give him an

– Daughters- Mary (Bloody
Mary) younger sister
