INTRODUCTION
The TD department organized a study tour for the senior three T.D students. The
study tour was to enable learners see and experience the particle part of T.D. We
set off for the tour on the 21st july2023 at around 9:30am and arrived at
11:30am. We used the school bus (The Rock) for Transport. On arrival we were
welcomed by Mr Otaba Patrick an instructor at Nakawa vocational training
college.
He brief us about the different places were to tour and the courses offered at the
college which includes;
Carpentry and wood work
Plumbing and water engineering
Building and construction
Civil engineering
Electronics
Electricity and machining among others
BRIEF HISTORY OF NAKAWA VOCATIONAL TRAINING COLLEGE

Nakawa was first started in 1968 when Milton Obote went to Japan and
saw how organized the Japanese were he then requested the Japanese
president to open institutes in Uganda. He gave them land for
construction. In 1970 0bote was over thrown by the military officials and
in 1972 Amin published the college officially. Nakawa is a science based
college. It was formed to empower young Ugandans and improve the
country.
The college emphases the 3H-Head (intellectual domain)
Hand (practical domain)
After we were briefed, we were taken to tour different departments in the
college.
DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS AT NAKAWA

Electrical departments
This department deals with electricity installment. In this departments we were
shown how electricity is applied in our daily life it is used to solve real life
problems for example transport – Electricity cars, bicycles
Light- Electricity
Resistant- Used to limit the flow of currents in the circuit
Fuse- Used for protection often blows up when the current is high

INDUSTRIAL TRAINING
Single Phase- Used when there’s light for small machines
Three Phase- Used on big machines for example motors, industrial bridges
supermarkets
Fro-red machine- Used to make soda and beers. Use three phase wiring
Synchronous generator- Used to understand the voltage a machine is using
WOOD
This WORK ANDCARPENTARY
department DEPARTMENT
deals with wood mainly. 75% of construction sector consists of
wood work. This department is responsible for making wooden items for
example; Wooden doors

Dining tables

Chairs

Desks etc
Rortar- Used for making designs on wood. There are many different types of
rortars over 60 and more. They use single and are portable.

WELDING AND PLUMBLING DEPARTMENT


In this department we learnt that it death with metal mainly metal fabrication.

Circular Saw Used to cut a long the length to reduce it
Hack saw Blade Used for cutting large section mild steel
Cross cut saw Used to cut down trees and to saw the trucks to length
Thickening machine For making sides equal
Surface Used to make the surface of wood plane before it is taken

Bent Saw Used for cutting curved surfaces on wood
Scrawling machine Used for making wooden toys and cutting curved surfaces
Ripping machine Used when you intend to make rough cuts on wood

Vanier Caliper Used to measure the thickness of an object
Protractor Used to measure angles

Holding Tools Uses
Wood work vice Used for holding big pieces of works
They have a greater holding force and stationary
Forge Tongs Used for holding hot metal while it is being worked on
the anvil.
G- Crump Is used for all kinds of work such as holding work
firmly to the bench
Tool Makers clamp Is very suitable for holding two or more pieces of metal
together
Holding Bars Used for holding big sheet metal when making straight
bends/ folds

Straight leg caliper Used for marking circular shapes
Centre punch and dot Used for marking places to be drilled
