◦ A phrasal verb is a group of words that function as a verb and is made up of a
verb plus a preposition, an adverb, or both. {Particles}
◦ Or in other words, a phrasal verb is a combination of a verb and an adverb or
preposition, which has a particular meaning, such as {look after}
 What is a phrasal verb?
◦ A phrasal verb = a verb+ a particle.
◦ For example: put off
Put =verb Off = particle
Example in a sentence: I put off my trip =I postponed my trip
He woke up at 6.30 am
Strangers woke him up
N/B The particle up looks like a preposition but it does not function as a preposition
The verb and particle have a special meaning.
 PARTICLES
◦ Particles are part of the verb phrase, and they often change the meaning of the
verb.
◦ Examples: He looked up the skyscraper.
A, In this up, is a preposition meaning this person’s face turned
toward the skyscraper.
She looked up a word in her dictionary.
B, In this up, is used as a particle that when combined with the
word looked gives us looked up meaning search.
