What is management?
Give me examples of what you think management might be.

How is it different from being an entrepreneur?


What is Management
Management involves getting people to work together for a common organisational goal
using the skills of leading, motivating and communicating

What skills do you need to be a successful manager?

In pairs come up with 3 skills needed to be a manager and why.

Leading
● Managers have a clear vision for the future that they share openly with employees
● Encourage employees together for a common organisational goal
● 3 styles : Autocratic

Democratic

laissez-faire
Motivating
● Managers must find out what motivates their employees in the workplace
● Can offer financial rewards e.g bonus payments
● Can offer non-financial rewards e.g additional holidays
● Will look at ‘Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs’ and ‘McGregor’s Theory X and Theory
Y’ in relation to this
Communicating
● Good managers must be good communicators with all stakeholders
● In oral, written and visual communication
● Through a range of methods - email, meetings etc.
Management activities
Planning
● Must identify the overall business goals and break them down
into more manageable tasks
● Should develop plans to achieve goals using resources available
e.g employees and capital
● Make short, medium and long term plans
Organising
● Need to identify roles and tasks that need to be performed by staff
● Organisational structures they can choose from are functional, geographic and
product
Controlling
● Management should build control mechanisms into the business - financial control,
stock control, quality control

1. Problem Solving:

A good manager should be able to find solutions to problems and deal with them quickly
and efficiently.

Good managers understand they may need to adapt management techniques and plans to
deal with any unforeseen circumstances

Charismatic managers have the ability to inspire people.
