INTRODUCTION TO

THE PHILOSOPHY OF
THE HUMAN PERSON
OBJECTIVE:
NOTICE THINGS THAT
ARE NOT IN THEIR
PROPER PLACE AND
ORGANIZE THEM IN AN
AESTHETIC WAY.

IDENTIFY DIFFERENT
APPROACHES OF
UNDERSTANDING
MAN’S RELATIONSHIP
WITH THE
ENVIRONMENT.
PPT11/12-II-4.1
Let’s do this!
-List the things that you did the whole
day today. Take of the products you
used, the things you bought, the things
you threw away. Which among them
do you think had an impact on the
environment either positive or
negative)?
-Looking back at your activities today,
what would you have done otherwise
to reverse whatever you did that
harmed the environment?
Let’s think?

Personally, how do you regard

the things in the environment?
As objects to make life more
comfortable? As means to
fulfill your needs? As a gift?
Explain your answer.
“Different approaches
of understanding
man’s relationship
with the environment”
COSMOS-CENTRIC
APPROACH
-shows that human beings are a
microcosm of the cosmos (‘micro”-
small + ‘cosmos’- universe).
*The universe is reflected in us; we
are a small version of the universe.
The same cosmic patterns that
govern nature also govern our
being.
*when these natural laws and
cosmic patterns are tampered
with, the resulting imbalance
will also affect the balance
between humans. (i.e.,
increased air pollution leading
to global warming and
increase incidence of asthma.)
THEOCENTRIC
APPROACH
-Theo (God) -centric approach refers to an
understanding coming from a religious
interpretation. Applies to Judeo-Christian
traditions as specified in the creation story.
The first man, ADAM, was given the power
over the rest of the creation. The creation
story tells of how God entrusted the earth to
man and woman by giving them the role of
Stewards of creation.
To steward means: to manage or
to put something under your
care.
“We are the problem and we,
ourselves are the solution.
“The human environment and the
natural environment deteriorate
together; we cannot combat
environmental degradation
unless we attend to causes
related to human and social
degradation.”
ANTROPOCENTRIC
APPROACH
Antropos (man) + centric is like the
theocentric approach that puts the human
person in dominion over the earth.
-focuses on the significant role of human
kind in the world and considers nature as
the means by which humans are able to
meet their needs and survive.
-this approach believes that
humans are the most
important species on the
planet and they are free to
transform nature and use its
resources.
BIOCENTRIC
APPROACH
-believes that humans are not the only
significant species on the planet, and
that all organisms have inherent value
and should be protected.
-this view drives the activities of
humaneorganizations that advocate the
ethical treatment of animals.
ECOCENTRIC APPROACH
-places great value on ecosystems
and biological communities.
-this view believes that humankind
is part of a greater biological
system or community and that we
have a significant role as stewards
or guardians of nature.
-this view also promotes the idea
that order and balance in nature
brings about stability and beauty.
Let’s do this!

Discuss in your group

which among the given
approaches should be
used to address our
environmental problems
today.
The identify what approach is ask in the following questions.
1. What view focuses on the significant role of humankind in the world and
considers nature as the means by which humans are able to meet their
needs and survive?
2. What view believes that humans are not the only significant species on
the planet, and that all organisms have inherent value and should be
protected?
3. What view places great value on ecosystems and biological
communities?
4. What approach focuses on the significant role of human kind in the
world and considers nature as the means by which humans are able to
meet their needs and survive.
5. This view drives the activities of humane organizations that advocate the
ethical treatment of animals.
Research!

Activities that shows

sustainable use of
resources and activities
that show misuse of
resources.
