CERTIFICATE
oThis is to certify that Palak Fagediya of class
XI B(Roll no. 11 ) has successfully completed
the Biology Investigatory Project under the
guidance of Dr. Sushma Jha on topic
“To investigate he effects of fertilizers on the
rate of germination .”
oAs prescribed by CBSE in the academic session
2023-24.
ACKNOWLEDGMENT
oI would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to
our head of school Ms. Kiran Upadhyay. I would
also like to thank our Biology teacher Dr.
Sushma Jha for being a source of inspiration and
guidance to me. I would like to thank our school’s
lab assistant Ms. Nish Rawal for assisting us in
the laboratory. I would like to thank my school,
Hilwoods School Gandhinagar for providing me
this platform to perform this project. I would
like to thank my parents for their support which
led to the completion of this project.
Aim
To study the effect of fertilizers on
the rate of germination.
Introduction
• Seed germination is the process by which the dormant
embryo wakes up and begins to grow . In other words ,
seed germination is the sprouting of the seed and
growth of embryo present inside the seed into a
seedling or young plant, capable of independent
existence. At the time of germination the seed absorbs
water through the micropyle or other parts of the seed
coat. Water makes the seed coat soft and permeable.
Entry of water into the seeds activate the embryo
cells . The hydrolytic enzymes mobiise the stored food
in the cotyledons or in the endosperms . The embryo
grows up by utilizing the hydrolysed food.
Materials required
Seeds of castor
Petridishes
Cotton pads
Balance
Measuring cylinder scale
Urea
Water
Procedure
1. Dissolve 0.5 gm,1 gm, 1.5 gm, 2gm , 2.5 gm of urea in 100 ml
of water each separately to get 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2% and
2.5% solutions of urea respectively .
2. Take a few castor seeds and soak the for about 12 hours .
3. Take six petridishes and place water soaked cotton pads in
each of them .
4. Now place 4-5 water soaked castor seeds in each
petridish.
5. To five of the petridishes pour urea solutions of different
concentration separately .
6. Keep the sixth petridish as control
7. Place the petridish in a dark and warm place for a few days
and allow the seeds to geminate
Observation
Observe the germination of seeds in each case at the time of
appearance of first leaf.
Record the observation in the following table.
