EMPOWERMENT TECHNOLOGY
QUARTER II
ONLINE SEARCH
Is a process of interactively searching for and
retrieving requested information via computer
from databases that are online.
SEARCH ENGINE
A search engine is a software system designed to
search the internet for documents related to the
keyword or search word used or entered into the
system. Users are able to maximize the potential
of search engines by learning the proper
searching protocols.
TOP 3 SEARCH ENGINES

 Google - is the best search engine worldwide. What made

google the most popular search engine is the quality of its
results.

 Bing – is the best alternative engine to Google. Bing is a

Microsoft attempt to challenge Google in search, despite their
efforts, they still did not manage to convince users that their
search engine can be as reliable as Google.
TOP 3 SEARCH ENGINES

 Yahoo – is one of the most popular email providers

and its web search engine holds third place in
search.
TYPES OF SEARCH ENGINES
 Crawler-based search engines – it uses spider or
a crawler to search the internet. It digs through
individual web pages, pulls out keywords, and
then adds the pages to the search engines
database.
TYPES OF SEARCH ENGINES
 Directories – depend on human editors to create
their listings or database. There are two types of
directories:
* Academic and Professional
Directories.
* Commercial and Portal
Directories.
 Hybrid Search Engine – use both crawler based
searches and directory searches to obtain their
results.
HOW TO SEARCH THE INTERNET
EFFECTIVELY
1. Use the keywords – determine which keyword
works best. The recommended maximum is 6
to 8 chosen words.

2. Use of phrases – the most powerful keyword is

a phrase, a combination of two or more words that
must be found in the documents being searched.
3. Capitalization – when searching for proper
names, use capital or uppercase to narrow the
search.

4. Boolean Logic – is a powerful search to a

reasonable number of results and increase the
chance of a useful outcome. The three most
commonly used are AND, OR, and NOT.
5. Wildcards and Truncation – This involves
substituting symbols for certain letters of a word so
that the search engine will retrieve item with any
letter in that spot in the word.

6. Think before you search – Think about the

topic or question you would like to search.
7. Keep it simple – Describe what you want in as
few terms as possible.

8. Be specific – The more precise your search

terms are, the more precise your search results will
be.
 Meta Search Engine - transmit user supplied
keywords simultaneously to several individual
search engines to carry out the search.
