Fortified Wines

Fortified wine is a wine to which


a distilled spirit, usually brandy, has been
added. In the course of some centuries,
winemakers have developed many
different styles of fortified wine,
including port, sherry, madeira,
marsala and vermouth
Fortified Wine
Port wine.

This type originates in Portugal but is now produced worldwide. Brandy is


added to the wine before it has finished fermenting, resulting in a sweeter flavor.
Sherry. Sherry is available in several varieties based on the
type of grapes used. Though it’s traditionally dry, it’s sometimes
sweetened and served as a dessert wine.

Manzanilla, Fino, Amontillado, Oloroso, Palo cortado, Cream and Pedro Ximénez.
Madeira
Madeira is a fortified wine made
on the Portuguese Madeira
Islands, off the coast of Africa.
Madeira is produced in a variety of
styles ranging from dry wines
which can be consumed on their
own, as an apéritif, to sweet wines
usually consumed with dessert.
Marsala is a
fortified wine, dry or
sweet, produced in the
region surrounding the
Italian city of Marsala in
Sicily. Marsala first
received

Vermouth
Vermouth is an aromatized fortified wine, flavoured
with various botanicals and sometimes colored. The modern
versions of the beverage were first produced in the mid to late
18th century in Turin, Italy
