USING SPEED CAMERAS

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

INTRODUCTION:
• Although there is good road safety performance the number
of people killed and injured on our roads remain unacceptably
high. So the roads safety strategy was published or introduced
to support the new casualty reduction targets. The road safety
strategy includes all forms of invention based on the
engineering and education and enforcement and recognizes
that there are many different factors that lead to traffic
collisions and casualties. The main reason is speed of vehicle.
We use traffic lights and other traffic manager to reduce the
speed.
One among them is SPEED CAMERA.
DESCRIPTION :
• A traffic enforcement camera (Speed Camera) is an automated ticketing
machine.

• It may include a camera which may be mounted beside or over a road.

• Other technologies that law enforcement agencies can use to measure

the speed of a moving vehicle uses doppler effect to beam a radio
wave at the vehicle, and then infer the vehicle's speed by measuring
the Doppler effect-moderated change in the reflected wave's frequency.

• Radar guns can be hand-held, vehicle mounted or mounted on a fixed

object, such as a traffic signal.
DOPPLER EFFECT
• Radar speed guns use Doppler radar to
perform speed measurements.
• Radar speed guns, like other types of radar,
consist of a radio transmitter and receiver.

MOBILE FIXED

HAND HELD MOUNTED FIXED OBJECT
mobile speed cameras:

• In Mobile Speed Cameras, cameras is installed in unbound cars that

transmit radar beam across the road.
• When the vehicle passes through it beam change in
frequency ,measuring the vehicle speed. And if the driver is travelling
over the speed limit the photograph of the vehicle is taken
automatically by camera .

When the driver is When the driver is

travelling in speed limit travelling above speed limit,
then photograph will taken
FIXED SPEED CAMERAS:

• Like mobile speed cameras these cameras are installed above

the flow of traffic, transmits the radar beam which bounces
of the vehicle.
• This provide highly accurate measure of the vehicle speed.
• Most red-light cameras, and many speed cameras, are fixed-
site systems mounted in boxes or on poles beside the road.
They are also often attached to gantries over the road, or to
overpasses or bridges.

When the driver is travelling above speed limit, then

TOLERANCE: It is a maximum error which is to be expected in some
value.
Speed Tolerance is more in case of Mobile Cameras than in Fixed
Cameras.

USES OF SPEED GUN
• It is commonly used by police to check the
speed of moving vehicles while conducting
traffic enforcement.

• professional sports to measure speeds such as

those of baseball pitches, tennis serves, and
cricket bowls.
ADVANTAGES:
• Cameras and number-plate recognition equipment can be
used for purposes unrelated to enforcement of traffic rules.

• Cameras installed can track the movement of vehicles for any

purpose.

• Motorists are thinks twice about speeding especially in urban

areas and school zones

• Motorists drive his vehicle as per instructed limit speeds

negatives related to speed cameras

 National motorist’s association [NMI] and other

organizations opposes speed cameras

 An awareness of presence of a ticket cameras can

cause some drivers to drive below posted speed
limit creating a road safety hazards

 Radar triggers cameras are imperfect and can

result in ticket being generated for false readingss
CONCLUSION
• We finally have a solution to the speeding problem.

• We would expect there to be a great number of these every

were and that day would be highly visible and identifiable to
make a drivers slow down.

• We use traffic lights and other traffic manager to reduce the

speed. One among them is speed cameras.
