ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY

In groups of 5 teacher will assign each group one type


of abuse. Each group will be given a blank sheet of
paper where they will come up with some specific
behaviors that would occur in their assigned abuse
category.

WHAT IS ABUSE?

Abuse is when someone causes us harm or distress. It


can take many forms, ranging from disrespect to
causing someone physical or mental pain.

It can occur in someone's home, a care home, hospital


or a public place.

Often the people who commit abuse are taking


advantage of a special relationship.
5 categories of
relationship abuse
PHYSICAL ABUSE

Physical abuse is any intentional,


unwanted contact with you or
something close to your body, or any
behavior that causes or has the
intention of causing you injury,
disability, or death.
EMOTIONAL
ABUSE
Emotional abuse includes non-physical
behaviors such as threats, insults, constant
monitoring or “checking in,” excessive
texting, humiliation, intimidation,
isolation, or stalking.
SEXUAL ABUSE

Sexual abuse refers to any behavior


that pressures or coerces someone to
do something sexually that they don’t
want to do.
PSYCHOLOGICAL
ABUSE

Psychological abuse involves trauma to the victim


via various other abusive behaviors, and that those
behaviors are used to “control, belittle and
terrorize, victims. It also involves using threats or
intimidation to frighten someone or make them
feel like they are losing touch with reality.
FINANCIAL
ABUSE

Financial abuse is when the finances in a


relationship or a persons’ potential to earn or have
money are controlled by one person.
