ELECTROMAGNETIC

WAVES
LEARNING
OBJECTIVES
• DEFINE THE ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES;
• ILLUSTRATE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF
ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES BY USING
ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM;
• COMPARE THE RELATIVE WAVELENGTHS AND
FREQUENCIES OF DIFFERENT FORMS OF
ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES.

WAVES
WHAT ARE THE
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN
MECHANICAL WAVES
AND
ELECTROMAGNETIC
WAVES?
Waves in water and sound waves in air are two examples of
mechanical waves
Matter such as solid, liquid, gas or plasma that mechanical
waves traveling through is called a “medium”.
Electromagnetic waves, such a visible light differ from
mechanical waves that they do not require a medium to
propagate.
HOW
ELECTROMAGNETIC
WAVES FORMED?
ELECTROMAGNET
IC WAVES
Electromagnetic wave (EM wave) or
electromagnetic radiation is a wave that is
created as a result of vibrations between
an electric field and magnetic field. EM
waves are composed of oscillating
magnetic and electric fields.
ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES
• The electric field and magnetic field of an electromagnetic wave are
perpendicular (at right angle) to each other.
• The electric field and magnetic field are also perpendicular to the
direction of the EM wave.
HOW FAST IS
ELECTROMAGNETIC
WAVES?
Electromagnetic waves travel with a constant velocity of 3.00 x

Electromagnetic spectrum is a continuum of electromagnetic
waves arranged according to frequency and wavelength.
• WAVE- It is a disturbance
in space.
• CREST - It is the highest
point in a wave.
• TROUGH - It is the lowest
• point in a wave.
• AMPLITUDE - It is the distance from the midpoint to (the
highest or lowest) point of wave.
• WAVELENGTH- It is the distance between any two
corresponding points on adjacent waves.
• FREQUENCY - it is the number of waves that pass, in a
specified amount of time, at a certain point.
ACTIVITY 1
GUIDE QUSTIONS:

Q1. Which electromagnetic wave has the longest wavelength?

Q2. Which electromagnetic wave has the shortest wavelength?
Q3. Observe what happens to the wavelength of the
electromagnetic waves as they progress (goes rightward from the
figure). Does the wavelength of the EM waves increase or decrease
as we go from radio wave to gamma ray?
Q4. Which among the EM waves has the highest frequency?
GUIDE QUSTIONS:

Q5. Which among the EM waves has the lowest frequency?

Q6. The energy of an EM wave also depends on its frequency,
which means waves with higher frequency has higher energy too.
Which among the EM waves has the highest energy?
Q7. Which among the EM waves has the lowest energy?
Q8. What happens to the frequency of the electromagnetic waves
as it progresses? Does the frequency of the EM waves increase or
decrease as we go from radio wave to gamma ray?
01 RADIO
WAVES

These are the waves that allow us to

listen to the radio. They have long
wavelengths and low frequencies. Radio
waves are used for broadcasting music,
news, and other information.
02 MICRO
WAVES
Microwaves have shorter wavelengths and
higher frequencies than radio waves. They are
used in microwave ovens to cook and heat
food. Microwaves are a type
of electromagnetic radiation, and are useful in
communications, radar and cooking
03 INFRARED
RADIATIO
N
Infrared radiation is sometimes called
"heat radiation" because we feel it as
warmth. It has longer wavelengths than
visible light. Infrared radiation is used in
devices like TV remote controls and
thermal cameras.
04 VISIBLE
LIGHT

This is the type of electromagnetic

radiation that allows us to see the world
around us. Visible light comes in different
colors, like red, orange, yellow, green,
blue, indigo, and violet. Each color has a
different wavelength.
05 ULTRAVIOLE
T
RADIATION
UV radiation has shorter wavelengths and
higher frequencies than visible light. It
comes from the sun and is responsible for
causing sunburns. We can't see UV
radiation, but it can be harmful to our
skin and eyes.
06 X-RAY

X-rays have even shorter wavelengths and

higher frequencies than UV ray. They can
pass through our bodies and are used in
medical imaging, like X-ray machines, to
see our bones and organs.
07 GAMMA
RAY
Gamma rays have the shortest
wavelengths and highest frequencies of
all the radiations. They are produced
during nuclear reactions and can be very
harmful. Scientists use gamma rays to
treat cancer.
