Prayer of St.

Augustine
God, You created heaven
and earth and filled them.
Your law is the truth and
You are truth. Blessed is he
who loves You, his friend in
You,
Prayer of St. Augustine
and those who are rejected
for Your name’s sake; For no
one who is dear to you
cannot be lost; and He abides
in You remains in You.
Amen.
LESSON 7

AUGUSTINE
ON
PRAYER
WHY WE
SHOULD
PRAY?
1.That we may keep
God’s commandments

Our love for God is

measured, not by how we
feel, but by how we live; not
by sentimentality and
emotion, but by our conduct
and behavior.
1.That we may keep
God’s commandments

The good we must do and

the evil we must avoid are
made clear to us in the
commandments of God.
We must pray for divine
assistance, the grace of God.
TEN COMMANDMENTS

1. I am the Lord your God. You shall

not have strange gods before me.
2. You shall not take the name of the
Lord your God in vain.
3. Remember to keep holy the
Lord’s Day.
4. Honor your father and your
mother.
5. You shall not kill.
TEN COMMANDMENTS
6. You shall not commit adultery.
7. You shall not steal.
8. You shall not bear false witness
against your neighbor.
9. You shall not covet your
neighbor’s wife.
10. You shall not covet your
neighbor’s goods.
1.That we may keep
God’s commandments

It is HE who makes us

will what is good.
It is HE who makes us
act by supplying
efficacious powers to our
will.
1.That we may keep
God’s commandments

That is why we always

need to ask from Him to
make us act by willing.
“Teach me that I may do
thy will.” (Psalm 143:10)
2. That we may avoid
sin
Men are separated from
God only by sins
We cannot avoid sin
unless we have recourse to
prayer
We guard against sin by
prayer
2. That we may avoid
sin
We must persevere in
prayer

The Lord’s prayer is the

clearest testimony of
grace
3. That we may not enter
into temptation
Every temptation is a test, and
every test bears its own fruit, you
do not really know what you are
able/unable to bear, sometimes
you presume to withstand what is
beyond you; or at times you
despair of being able to cope with
what you could well bear.
3. That we may not
enter into temptation
The effort of the human will
is not enough to conquer
temptation and the
reinforcing strength of grace
should be asked of God in
prayer.
4. That we may advance
in perfection
To advance in perfection
we need grace, to grow in
grace we must recourse to
prayer. No man gives it to
himself; it is the gift of
God.
4. That we may advance in
perfection

Charity knows nothing but to

increase more and more.
To live a good life is a gift
from God.
All good works are one of
charity.
5. That we may persevere
unto the end
 Perseverance is a gift from God
 The end of our purpose is Christ, for
however much we attempt, in Him
and by Him we are made perfect;
and this is our perfection that we
come home to Him
 The soul is a pilgrim homeward
bound and prayer is the pilgrim’s
song
Prayer of St. Augustine
What shall I render unto the Lord,
that while my memory recalls these
things, my soul is not appalled at
them?
I will love you, O Lord, and thank
you and confess unto Your name,
because You have put away from
me. These so wicked and nefarious
acts of mine. Amen.
