Sequence
- In mathematics, a sequence is an enumerated
collection of objects in which repetitions are allowed
and order matters. Like a set, it contains members
(also called elements, or terms). The focus of our
module for today will be all about NUMBER
SEQUENCE.
Number Sequence
5, 10, 15, 20, 25

a1 a2 a3 a4 a5
Given the sequence below, answer the
following:

4, 12, 36, 108, 324

Answer the following:
5
1. Number of terms: _____ 4. a5 = 324
____
4
2. a1 = ____ 5. a4 = 108
____
36
3. a3 = ____
Missing Number Pattern
Number Sequence term of terms Formed

1. 5, 10, __ , 20, 25 15 5 adding by 5

2. 3, __ , 27, 81 multiplying by 3
9 4
3. -1, 1, __, 1 multiplying by -
-1 4 1
4. 40, __, 30, 25 … 35 Infinite adding by – 5
5. 2, __, 8, - 16 … multiplying by -
-4 Infinite 2
Finite Sequence
A sequence that ends and has a countable
number of terms.
Example:
1) 5, 10, 15, 20, 25
2) 3, 9, 27
3) -1, 1, - 1, 1
Infinite Sequence
A sequence that keeps on going and going.
The number of terms are not countable or
infinite.
Example:
1) 40, 35, 30, 25, …
2) 2, - 4, 8, - 16 …
Determine if the sequence
is finite or infinite
1) - 5, 0, 5, 10 Finite
2) 3, 6, 9, 12 … Infinite
3) Days of the week Finite
4) Teenage life Finite
5) 3, 6, 9, … 27, 30, 33 Infinite
Determine if the sequence
is finite or infinite
6) Positive even numbers Infinite
Determine if the sequence
is finite or infinite
7) Prime numbers Infinite
Determine if the sequence
is finite or infinite
8) odd numbers less than 20
Infinite

{19, 17, 15, 13, 11, 9, 7, 5, 3, 1, -1, … }

Determine if the sequence
is finite or infinite
9) Positive odd numbers less than 30
Finite

{29, 27, 25, … 5, 3, 1}

Determine if the sequence
is finite or infinite

10) Even numbers between 11 and 21

Finite

{20, 18, 16, 14, 12}

Solve for the nth term of the sequence.

1) 5, 7, 9, 11, … a5 = ____ 13
2) - 1, - 4, - 7, … a7 = ____ - 19
3) - 3, - 9, - 27, - 81 … a6 = ____- 729

4) 7, - 21, 63, - 189 … a5 = ____ 567
