PROPERTIES OF

OPERATIONS IN
THE SET OF
INTEGERS
Commutative Property of Addition
(CPA)

a+b=b+a
Examples:
1.) 2 + 7 = 7 + 2 2.) 3 + 8 = 8 + 3
9=9 11 = 11
Commutative Property of Multiplication
(CPM)

a∙b=b∙a
Examples:
1.) 2 ∙ 7 = 7 ∙ 2 2.) 3 ∙ 8 = 8 ∙ 3
14 = 14 24 = 24
Associative Property of Addition
(APA)
(a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
Examples:
1.) (2 + 7) + 3 = 2 + (7 + 3)
9 + 3 = 2 + 10
12 = 12

2.) (3 + 8) + 5 = 3 + (8 + 5)
11 + 5 = 3 + 13
16 = 16
Associative Property of Multiplication
(APM)
(a ∙ b) ∙ c = a ∙ (b ∙ c)
Examples:
1.) (2 ∙ 7) ∙ 3 = 2 ∙ (7 ∙ 3)
14 ∙ 3 = 2 ∙ 21
42 = 42
2.) (3 ∙ 8) ∙ 5 = 3 ∙ (8 ∙ 5)
24 ∙ 5 = 3 ∙ 40
120 = 120
Distributive Property
(DP)
a(b + c) = ab + ac
a(b – c) = ab – ac
Examples:
1.) 3(2 + 7) = 3(2) + (3)(7) 2.) 2(8 – 5) = 2(8) – 2(5)
3(9) = 6 + 21 2(3) = 16 – 10
27 = 27 6=6
Identity Property of Addition
(IPA)

a+0=a
Examples:

1.) 2 + 0 = 2 2.) 8 + 0 = 8
Identity Property of Multiplication
(IPM)

a∙1=a
Examples:

1.) 2 ∙1 = 2 2.) 8 ∙ 1 = 8
Inverse Property of Multiplication

a∙
Examples:

1.) 2 ∙ =1 2.) 8 ∙ =1
Inverse Property of Addition

a + (-a) = 0
Examples:

1.) 2 + (-2) = 0 2.) 8 + (-8) = 0

Zero Property of Multiplication

a∙0=0
Examples:

1.) 2 ∙ 0 = 0 2.) 8 ∙ 0 = 0
