Electricity and Magnetism

Capacitor
- it consists of two conducting plates separated
by an insulator.
- it is a passive element designed to store
energy in its electric field.
q=CV
Where:
q= charge (coulombs, C)
V= voltage (volts, V)
C= capacitance (Farad, F)
Capaticance- the ratio of charge on
plate of capacitor to the voltage
difference between the two plates,
measured in Farads (F).

1 Farad = 1coulomb/Volt
C=£A/d
Where:
C= capacitance (Farad, F)
£= permittivity of dielectric
material( Farad/meter, F/m)
A= surface area of each plate (square
meter, m2)
d= distance between two plates
( meter,m)
SYMBOLS OF CAPACITOR
Passive Sign Convention

If current enters the positive voltage polarity,V is

positive and capacitor is charging

If current enters the negative voltage polarity, V

is negative and capacitor is discharging
