HISTORY
Aborigines, the first humans to arrive in Australia. They probably
arrived on the Australian continent around 50,000 years ago.
In 1616 a Dutch sailing ship, Eendracht, on its way to Indonesia
bumped into west coast of Australia. Captain Dirk Hartog landed at
Shark Bay, on the Western Australian coastline, looked around and
didn't find anything interesting there. This was the first recorded
European landing in Australia.
AUSTRALIA AS A BRITISH COLONY
Captain James Cook

Cook had noticed that there was a native

population, but they proved to be largely
docile and to have no intention of resisting
any incursions by Europeans.

The reason for wanting to colonize this place

was its remoteness and harshness. These
properties were exactly what were needed
when the old country wanted to export its
most troublesome commodity, namely its
criminals and undesirables. Australia was
perfectly suited to becoming a penal colony.

HOLIDAYS

Australia celebrates many of the same holidays

as do people of the Western world, such as
Easter and Christmas. However, Australians
also celebrate some holidays unique to their
country and culture.
Christmas: Australia’s version of the holiday
Christmas varies with other countries’ holiday
because there, Christmas is celebrated in the
Western summer.

Decorations: Homes are not decorated as heavily as in some
cultures but there are two traditional native plants used for the
occasion: The NSW Christmas bush and Christmas bells.

Santa Claus is usually pictured in a swimming costume and a cool

drink is left out for him by children at night. School is let out a
week prior to Christmas for summer break and resumes after
Australia Day on January 26.
ANZAC DAY
APRIL 25

The holiday is set aside to honor

Australians who have died in
wars and considered the most
important national occasion.

It is also celebrated on New

Zealand.
During the day, the ceremonies always
include an introduction, a hymn, a
prayer, and address, laying of wreaths,
recitation, a period of silence, and the
National Anthem.

Veterans celebrate by marching

through the streets of cities in the
morning and share drinks and
memories in the afternoon.
AUSTRALIA DAY
JANUARY 26

This holiday commemorates the anniversary of the day in

1788 when the English declared Australia a new colony.
It is celebrated with parties, picnics, and fireworks and
coincides with the last days of summer vacation. This is
considered a family holiday.

fight bacterial infection in mice and,
later, humans. The antibiotic was
mass produced and used to aid
victims of World War II.
Electric drill: DIY-
enthusiasts can thank an
