Definitions

 Ecosystems: A natural community

of organisms interacting with
themselves and their physical
environment
 Biotic: Relating to living things
that affect another organism
 Abiotic: Relating to physical
things other than biological
 Habitat: A natural home for a
living organism
Abiotic Factors

 Water: All living organisms need

water even though it is not living.
Many organisms also have a
habitat in water

 Oxygen: All living organisms need

to respirate to be alive

 Sunlight: It is used by plants to

perform photosynthesis
and without this plant cannot
making food and an ecosystem
cannot survive
Biotic Factors

 Animals: Animals are a very

important part of the food chain
 Plants: Many animals rely on
plants for food and herbivores are
eaten by other animals
 Bacteria: Bacteria help
decompose bio-waste
Ecosystems

 A jungle is an example of a land-

based ecosystem
 Great Barrier Reef is an example
of a marine ecosystem
Australian Estuaries

 Estuaries are partly enclosed bodies of

water where fresh water meets sea
water and this results in brackish water
 Estuaries may be fully open or just open
to the sea
 These areas are affected by the river
current and the tidal flow
 New South Wales has 184 estuaries
including Botany Bay and Lake Macquarie
etc.
 Estuaries are diverse forms of water
providing habitats to marine life. They
also aid in commercial fishing, tourism
and recreation
Estuaries

 An estuary is a coastal body of

water where rivers and streams
meet the ocean
 Estuaries are formed when water
floods existing river valleys
 Estuaries are usually located near
coastal areas around the world
 Estuaries filter sediments and
pollutants from rivers and streams
leading clan water to the ocean.
This water is used by marine and
land-based animals for survival
Species in Estuaries

 Mangrove: It is a type of tree that

grows in shallow water near
coastal area. Mangroves are also a
term used for plants growing in
tropical coastal areas.
 Fish species: Salt and fresh-water
fishes live in estuaries such
as salmon and trout. Along
the bottom live many kinds
of shellfish and crabs
