Two Way Tables

How to Create a Two Way Table.

- Read through all of the information first. Two Way tables have data
- Pick out the different categories for rows and columns.
- Set out your table.
- Fill in what you know

The last row and the column are the totals.

The bottom right cell is the total number of
people in the survey.

90 people were asked whether they

preferred Soaps, Drama or Crime shows.
12 men said they liked Dramas
33 people in total said they liked Soaps, and
27 of these were women.
25 people in total liked Dramas best.
Only 10 women liked Crime shows.
Bar Charts
- Use a bar chart when the data is categories
(worded) or discrete data (only certain numbers
possible)
Bar Chart
- Ensure that the bars have gaps between them

- Give your bar chart a title

Dual - Use a key
Bar Chart - y axis is always frequency

- Use a key
- Bars are stack on top of each other
Compound
Bar Chart
Grouped Data
Group frequency tables are a good way of recording
a wide spread of data in a manageable table.
Place 95 seconds in the correct group.

Look for the equal part

of the inequality
Frequency Diagrams
- Use a frequency charts when the data
is continuous data (all numbers possible)

- Ensure that the bars have no gaps

between them

- Always title your diagram

- y axis is always frequency

- x axis must be a continuous scale

(no words or groupings)
Averages from a List
- Most Common
2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 9 - You can have more than one mode
Mode = 2 and 3 - It is possible to have no mode
- Middle value
2,3,3,4,5,9
- Data must be in order of size
Median = 3.5 (middle of 3 and 4)
- Sum the data and divide by the
2 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 4 + 9 = 24 number of pieces of data
Mean = = 4
- Range = Biggest value – Smallest value
2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 9
Range = 9 – 2
Which Average to Use
Pro: Not effective by extreme values
Mode Con: Can have more than one mode
1, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 276

Pro: Not effective by extreme values

Median Con: Value of other data not taken into account
1, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 276

Pro: Includes all Values

Mean
1 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 21 Con: Is effective by extreme values
1 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 4 + 280 = 296

Pro: Shows how consistent the data maybe

Range Cons: Can not tell how well the data performed
2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 130=
Range = 128 (inconsistent)
2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2
Range = 0 (very consistent)
Averages from a Frequency Table
Mode
Goals Frequency The highest frequency of goals is 3

0 3 0x3= 0 Median
1 3 1x3= 3 Total pieces of data is 20 (total frequency). So the median will
be found between the 10th and 11th piece of data
2 5 2x5= 10
Adding up the frequency 3 + 3 + 5 show that
3 6 3x6= 18
the 10th value is 2 and the 11th value is 2……so the median is 2
4 2 4x2= 8
1 5x1= 5 Mean
5
20 44
Watch out of the common mistake of 0 x 3 = 3
If you converted the data in the table Range
into a list it would look like this: Biggest amount of goals – Smallest amount of goals
0,0,0, 1,1,1, 2,2,2,2,2, 3,3,3,3,3,3, 4,4, 5 5–0=5
Common mistake: Biggest frequency – Small Frequency 6 – 1 = 5
Line Graphs
Trends are the general pattern
Line graphs are good for describing trends the data follows.

The trend is the overall pattern.

You don’t need to describe every
increase and decrease.

The trend of electrical units has pretty much been constant.

You basic options to describe

The trend of the temperature trends are increase, decrease or
has increased over time.
stay constant.

Scatter Graphs
Describe the Correlation Positive correlation - as one value increases the other
increases
Negative correlation – as one value increase the other
decreases
No correlation – no relationship between the data
Describe the Relationship As the children ages increases their heights increase

As the car gets older the price decreases

Line of Best Fit Line of best should pass through the middle of the points.

The line of best fit does not have to go (0,0)
