Coinage
• Invention of new terms.
• New words are coined from trade names or product
brands that have become generally acceptab;e terms for
the products they represent.
Examples:
Xerox
Nylon
Aspirin
Band-Aid
Linoleum
Frisbee
Eponyms
• Words coined from names of
person or places.
Example:
Sandwich – from Earl of Sandwich
Philippines – King Philip
Volt – Alessandro Volta
Borrowing
• Taking or adopting of words from
other languages
Example:
Paper- Egyptian word papyrus
Person- From Latin Persona
Compounding
• Is the joining of two independent
words to form a new word.
Example/s:
Text + book = Textbook
Finger + Print = Fingerprint
Sun + Flower = Sunflower
Blending
• Is the fusion of two separate words to
form a new word.
Example/s:
Smoke + fog = smog
Motor + Hotel = Motel
Television + Broadcast = Telecast
Breakfast + Lunch = Brunch
Clipping
• Is the reduction of words to their
shorter form.
Example/s:
Advertisement = Ad
Doctor = Doc
Examination = Exam
Mathematics = Math
