LEVEL OF ANXIETY IN
PUBLIC SPEAKING OF
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
STUDENTS
SANCHO M. BOLAÑOS JR.
Researcher
Communication skills are central to the list of graduate objectives, as well as
sought after traits of hiring employers (Schroth, 2019).
Public speaking is a common activity for people. It helps learners express their
ideas, thoughts, feelings and opinions.

However, many people who converse easily in all kinds of everyday situations
become frightened at the idea of standing up before a group to make a speech.

In some conditions, most students have difficulties in speaking. They lack

vocabulary, lack of confidence, lack grammar in English knowledge, anxiety, etc.
This situation can be traced to Public Speaking Anxiety (PSA) defined by
McCroskey (1984) as part of communication apprehension, the level of fear or
individual’s anxiety related to communication activity with a person or many
people
This study aims to determine the level of public speaking anxiety
among the Senior High School students of Bonga National High School,
Bonga, Bacacay, Albay. Specifically, it seeks answers to the following sub-
problems:

1. What is the level of anxiety in public speaking of the Senior High

School students in Bonga National High School?
2. What factors contribute to the level of anxiety of the students?
3. What innovative material may be proposed to address the level of
anxiety in public speaking among the Senior High School students?
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Assimilation Theory

Schema Theory
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
RESEARCH DESIGN

This study will employ the mixed method design which is the
combination of qualitative and quantitative approach to collect
and analyze data (Creswell & Tashakkori, 2007) in order to
investigate the level of speech anxiety of Senior High School
students of Bonga National High School.
RESEARCH DESIGN

This study will employ the explanatory model, which contains

first quantitative data collection followed by qualitative data
collection. This method will be used in order to obtain a clearer
picture from the quantitative data, and then to use the
qualitative data to provide better understanding and
explanation of the study in question.
RESPONDENTS

The respondents of the study are the Senior High School students
enrolled in Bonga National High School school year 2022-2023. The
respondents will come from the grade 11 students who are taking up
Oral Communication under the Humanities and Social Sciences, TVL-
Home Economics, TVL- Information and Communication Technology
and TVL- Industrial Arts. The sample size will be determined by
Slovin’s formula for proportional allocation.
INSTRUMENT
SOTP 1-The researcher will utilize the Personal Report of Public
Speaking Anxiety (PRPSA), a 34-item, 5-step, Likert-type scale
(McCroskey, 1970) to be employed as the assessment of anxiety about
speaking in the public context. This instrument has established validity
and reliability (McCroskey, 1970) as a measure of generalized context-
based anxiety about public speaking (PSA).
INSTRUMENT

SOTP 2-The second instrument is adopted from previous studies. It

contains the factors that contribute to the level of the speaking anxiety
of the respondents. The respondents will be asked to score with a five-
point Likert scale which are (5) strongly agree, (4) agree, (3) neutral,
(2) disagree, or (1) strongly disagree. These factors consisted of three
main aspects: linguistic factors (items: 1-5), physical factors (item: 6-
10) and environmental factors (item: 11-16).
STATISTICAL TREATMENT

Data will be subjected to statistical analysis. The statistical tools used

in this study will be: (a) Simple descriptive statistical method.
Descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage will be used.
Percentage- employed to translate the frequency into hundredths; (b)
Descriptive measures such as mean will be used for the
characterization of the levels of communication of the respondents in
the Personal Report of Public Speaking Anxiety (PRPSA) of students.
