Color Coding

What i s a Re s i s t or c ol or
c odi ng?

a strategy to get the resistance value

of a resistor without using any
instrument
How can we get its
resistance value?
Each resistor contains two leads and a
ceramic component that opposes the
flow of electricity between them.
Resistor is made up of colored strips
that show the resistance value
Has passive two-terminals
electrical component

Has colored strips called

bands with a specific value
Multiplier Tolerance

Black Coefficient

colors Value Tolerance

BLACK 0
BROWN 1 1%
RED 2 2%
ORANGE 3
YELLOW 4
GREEN 5 0.5%
BLUE 6 0.25%
VIOLET 7 0.1%
GREY 8 0.05%
WHITE 9
SILVER .1 10%
To easily memorize the chart , use the
mnemonics

“Big Boys Race Our Young Girls But

Violet Generally Wins FOR Silver and
Gold"
B Black G Green
B Brown B Blue
R Red V Violet
O Orange G Grey
Y Yellow W White
Black zero , brown one, Red is 2, Orange is
3, yellow is 4, green 5 blue 6 , violet 7, Grey
is 8 and White is 9 .

There’s still a gold and silver (2x)

Silver’s value is a point 1
And gold is, point zero one
Example:

First Band Yellow 4

Second Band Violet 7
Multiplier Orange 1kΩ
Tolerance Gold 5%
Color Code = 47 x 1k Ω with a tolerance of +/- 5%.
= 47 kΩ with a tolerance of +/- 5%.
Example:

First Band red 2

Second Band red 2
Multiplier black 1Ω
Tolerance green 0.5%

Color Code = 22 x 1 Ω with a tolerance of +/- 0.5%.

= 22 Ω with a tolerance of +/- 0.5%.
