 When can an observer from Earth will be able to see
the stars?
 Why can’t we see stars on the same side of the sun?
 Why during summer in the. Philippines, constellations
Orion & Taurus are not visible at night but can be
seen during cold season?
Do you know how early people
determine when to sow or
harvest when they don’t have
.

calendars?
USES OF CONSTELLATION
Guide to determine when to sow or
harvest.
-Ancient people developed a way to remember the
patterns by giving these patterns
.
names and stories.
-Ex. Orion indicates the coming of cold season.
Gemini is seen in the Philippines during the months of
April and May. Farmers interpreted the appearance of
Gemini as the end of planting season and it signified rich
harvest.
USES OF CONSTELLATION

.
What are the other uses of
constellation?
.
USES OF CONSTELLATION
Navigation
-Polaris is widely used in navigation because it does not
change its position at any time of the night or year. Also,
one can figure out his/her latitude
. just by looking at how
high Polaris appears in the night sky. This allowed sailors to
find their way as they sail across the seas.
Which statement best explains why Cygnus is visible to an
observer in Manila in September but not visible in March?
A. Earth spins on its axis.
B. Earth orbits the Sun.
C. Cygnus spins on its axis.
D. Cygnus orbits the Earth.
If you are located at the North Pole, where
will you see the Polaris?
A. Overhead
B. Just above the horizon
C. Around 45° from the horizon
D. Polaris will not be seen in the North Pole.
At which location can an observer not see Polaris in
the night sky at any time during the year?
A. A and D
B. B and C
C. C and D
D. D and B
How are constellation being used?
A. in navigation
B. in assessing when to plant crops
C. in keeping track of the calendar
D. all of the above
Why do we get to see particular zodiac constellation
at specific times of the year?
A. Because the earth rotates.
B. Because the sun seems to rise and set.
C. Because the earth revolves around the sun.
D. Because the zodiac constellations have its own
path.

CLASS
MERCURY
Mercury is the smallest planet in the Solar System
and the closest to the Sun.

It has a heavily cratered surface and no

atmosphere, which means it experiences extreme
temperature fluctuations.

Mercury has a very slow rotation, which means it

has a long day and a long night.
VENUS
Venus is the second planet from the Sun, and it's
often called Earth's sister planet because of its
similar size and composition.

Venus has a thick, toxic atmosphere that traps

heat, making it the hottest planet in the Solar
System.

The surface of Venus is covered in volcanoes and

rocky plains.
EARTH
Earth is the third planet from the Sun, and the only
known planet to support life.

It has a diverse atmosphere that protects us from

the Sun's harmful radiation, and a magnetic field
that helps to shield us from the solar wind.

Earth's surface is covered in water and land and

has a complex and dynamic geology.
MARS
Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun, and is
often called the "Red Planet" because of its
reddish appearance.

It has a thin atmosphere, with a surface that is

covered in rust-colored dust and rocky terrain.

Mars has polar ice caps and evidence of past

liquid water on its surface.
UNDERSTANDING THE
GAS GIANTS
The four outer planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are called gas
giants because they are primarily made of gas and have no solid surface.

They are much larger than terrestrial planets and have many unique
features, such as rings and many moons.
JUPITER
Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System,
and it's known for its swirling, colorful clouds and
the Great Red Spot, a massive storm that has been
raging for centuries.

It has a strong magnetic field and many moons,

including the four largest: Io, Europa, Ganymede,
and Callisto.
SATURN
Saturn is known for its beautiful ring, which made up of
ice and dust particles.

It has a similar composition to Jupiter, but is less dense

and has a weaker magnetic field.

Saturn has also many moons, including the largest,

Titan, which has a thick atmosphere and hydrocarbon
lakes.
URANUS
&
NEPTUNE
Uranus and Neptune are often called the "ice giants"
because they have much lower atmospheric temperatures
than the gas giants.

Uranus is known for its extreme tilt which means that its
poles are almost in the plane of its orbit.

Neptune has the strongest winds of any planet in the Solar

System, and is known for its large moon, Triton, which
believed to have been captured from the Kuiper Belt.
