 Intercultural communication is the verbal and nonverbal


interaction between people from different cultural
backgrounds.
 Translation studies is an academic interdiscipline dealing
with the systematic study of the theory, description and
application of translation, interpreting, and localization.

INTERRELATION OF TS AND IC
 Translation relates to the exchange of words that carry the
meaning and accurate transmission of the message between
two interlocutors or between two different identities with
unmatched tradition, culture and habits.

 Translator finds the right linguistic and cultural


parameters for the sole purpose of realizing
communication

THE GOAL OF THE COURSE
 Knowledge of the cognitive-linguacultural foundations of
intercultural communication in translation studies
 Application of cognitive and lingua-cultural translation
analysis to come over the problems related to cognitive and
cultural diversities

THE OBJECTIVES
 Awareness of the notions of “cognition”, “mentality”, “concept”,
“linguistic relativity”, “cultural identity” and “cognitive
metaphors”;
 Understanding of cognitive linguistics and cognitive translation;
 Interrelation of linguoculture and intercultural communication”;
 Multiple meanings of words (denotative and connotative) and to
make them aware of the errors of perception equivalents:
literalism, transliteration, paronymy;
 Correlation of linguistic and cultural norms of translation;
 Analyses of word semantics in different cultures;
 Reveal the interrelation of language and mentality;

 Understanding of problems of inadequacy of meaning, words and
mentality/
TECHNOLOGIES OF THE COURSE:

1. Oral discussion on the key issues of theory and practice of


intercultural communication in translator training.
2. Brainstorming on the issues of translation as the means of
intercultural communication; development of intercultural
communication; the role of context in intercultural
communication; language and culture interrelation.
3. Analysis of practical situations and critical incidents referring
to the discusses topics.
4. Case technologies on the development of issues under
consideration.
5. Presentation of group, individual and mini theoretical and
applied projects according to the module topics.

6. Solution of pragmatic- professional tasks to evaluate the
students knowledge on the discussed topics.

 A. Seminar question: Illustrate translation,
interpretation or localization errors related to fail of
intercultural communication in different spheres like
political or social communication, marketing, show
business.
 B. Suggest better ways of translation, interpretation and
localization for Kazakhstan

translation: Translation of ‘Hello’ is differently in Russian
or Kazakh depending on a social context. Sometimes it is
‘Здравствуйте’, sometimes ‘Привет’.

 В. «Hello, could I have 400 with a schmear?» -
