Izuka Kenechukwu completed a 6-month industrial work experience at Rock Foundation Hospital in Awka, Anambra State, Nigeria. They presented on their experience, which included learning about the hospital's organizational structure and departments, conducting blood typing tests to determine blood groups, and gaining hands-on experience that reinforced their biological sciences education. The training experience helped them practice laboratory techniques for testing samples and identifying microorganisms, despite initial challenges in securing a placement. Overall, the internship provided valuable real-world work experience beyond the classroom.

It first started as a 4 room hospital in Umuogwali Village, Awka. The first set of workers in the hospital was; two doctors, one nurse and one receptionist. In January 7th 2005 the hospital having grown bigger, was transferred to a two flat accommodation at No. 4 Igwebuike Grammar school Road from where it has grown to occupy four flats, as at 2007 the hospital had staff strength of two doctors, twelve nurses, two lab technicians and four support staff. In January 4th 2016, the hospital moved into its new building at No. 34 Onwurah Street, Awka with staff strength of 35 including four medical doctors, one physiotherapist, four lab technicians, sixteen nurses and ten support staff. BLOOD GROUPING Blood grouping, also known as blood typing, is the process of determining an individual’s blood type. The blood type is determined by the presence or absence of certain antigens (proteins) on the surface of red blood cells. There are four major blood types: A, B, AB, and O. These blood types are determined by the presence of two antigens, namely antigen A and antigen B. If an individual has antigen A, they have blood type A. if they have antigen B, they have blood type B. if they have both antigens A and B, they have blood type AB. If they have neither of these antigens, they have blood type O. In addition to these antigens, the blood also contains Rh factor, which is another protein on the surface of the red blood cells. The presence or absence of the Rh factor determine whether an individual has Rh-positive (+) or rh negative (-) MATERIALS USED IN THE TEST
Blood Sample Antigen A.B.O
Pasteur pipette White Tiles
TEST PROCEDURE O Bring all reagents and blood samples to a room temperature. O Divide and mark the white tile A, B, O. O Place one drop on each reagent on the marked tile. O Place one drop of whole blood on each of the marked area. O Mix the content then rock gently from side to side for 1-3mins then observe for agglutination or clumping A picture of me observing the clumping of the blood on a white Tiles RELEVANCE OF INDUSTRIAL TRAINING TO BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES
Biology is the study of life and as a
biological science student, I studied viruses, parasites and micro organisms that affects human beings, their control and preventive measures. During my training in the laboratory, it helped me to practice what I was taught, I got to learn how to test human for the viruses ( like urinalysis and blood grouping), how to detect them and so as to save life. CONCLUSION The period of my industrial training was not void of challenges. The search for an IT placement was very stressful for me as some firms insisted they do not need I.T students while others said they already had enough. Also, finance was a big challenge as no remuneration was paid me by the establishment. Nevertheless, these 4 months was most beneficial to me than other years of my study in school. It exposed me to the labor market, to work environment, helped me improve skills like diligence, competence, punctuality, etc. THANK YOU
