Introduction
Narrative Writing
- is a form of writing that tells a story or describes a sequence of events.
- it can be fictional or non-fictional
- It is often used to convey a message or express emotions
- allows us to connect with others on a deeper level by sharing our experiences and
perspectives
- enables us to explore different worlds, cultures, and ideas, and helps us understand
ourselves better
- can create meaning, inspire change, and leave a lasting impact.
Composition
Format:

ALWAYS: a choice of 2 each of Argument/Discursive, Description, Narrative.


Word Count: 350-450 words.
1 hour for this part of the paper – 10 minutes at least for planning
Total Marks: 40 Marks

Elements Of Narrative Writing
Plot - the sequence of events that make up a story. It includes the exposition, rising action,
climax, falling action, and resolution.

Character - refers to the individuals or creatures that appear in a story. They can be
protagonists, antagonists, or supporting characters.

Setting - the time and place in which a story takes place. It can include physical locations,
historical periods, and cultural contexts.

Theme - the underlying message or meaning of a story. It can be conveyed through


symbolism, imagery, and motifs.

Point Of View - refers to the perspective the story is told from. This element includes first-
person, third-person, and third-person omniscient narrators.

Style - the way the writer uses language including diction, voice, tone, sentence style, etc.
Techniques For Narrative Writing

Foreshadowing is a technique used in narrative writing that hints at events or outcomes that will
happen later in the story. It creates suspense and anticipation for the reader.

Flashback is another technique used in narrative writing where the author takes the reader back
in time to an earlier event. It is often used to provide background information or to explain a
character's motivations.

Imagery is a technique used in narrative writing that appeals to the reader's senses. It helps to
create a vivid and immersive experience for the reader.
Modes Of Persuasion

Modes of persuasion can be employed to engage and convince the audience, and they assist:
- Characterization
- Expertise
- Authenticity
- Emotions
- Empathy
- Reasoning / Evidence
Requirements For Extended Students
Tips For Narrative Writing
● Use strong verbs that paint a vivid picture in the reader's mind
● Instead of using weak verbs, opt for more descriptive ones
● Show instead of tell
● Describe physical reactions and body language to convey emotions
● Create a clear structure (beginning, middle, and end to show the transitions)
● Write the events in chronological order
● Keep it simple – few characters and a straight forward story line
● PLAN IN DETAIL. A simple plot is easier to write and clearer to mark.
● Remember to describe and to set up setting and atmosphere – use description to
develop your writing.
Question/Task
Read the extract, of the 'Last Voyage Of Mary Celeste', in page 62, and write a story from a
survivor's account, with the title ‘Horrors Of The Sea’. Write about 200-300 words, and
complete this task in your notebook.

Up to 15 marks are available for the content of your answer, and up to 25 marks for the
quality of your writing.
