Common Nouns and
Proper Nouns
What are the four kinds of
sentences?
Everything we see or we can talk about
is represented by a word that names it.
That word is called a noun. We have
learned that nouns are naming words. A
noun is the name of a person, place,
thing, or animal.
The italicized words are proper nouns and the
underlined words are called common nouns.
What are the underlined words in the story? If
you answered father, mother, brother, sister,
driver, neighbor, cat, and dog, you are right! We
call them common nouns. Let’s put all together
all common nouns in the first column.

The first type is a COMMON NOUN. All the nouns in the first
column are called common nouns. A common noun is a
general word used to name people, places, things, and
animals. A common noun does not name a person, place,
thing, or animal.

proper noun always starts with a capital
letter.
