BODY • PHYSICAL SELF is the concrete or tangible aspect or dimension of the person which is primarily observed and examined thru the body. • We experience life thru our sense and bodies. The body is the sight for the articulation of all our identification of gender, class, sexuality, race, ethnicity and religion. • According to Sigmund Freud physical body is the core of human experiences. • Maurice Merleu-Ponty (1945) placed the body at the center of human existence, as a way of experiencing the world. • The change of appreciated body color reversed the social- bodily distinction between people and classes, and nudism become a radical expression of this body-cultural change. 2. THE IMPACT OF CULTURE ON BODY IMAGE AND SELF-ESTEEM: THE IMPORTANCE OF BEAUTY
• Standards of beauty and appearance are the product of a diverse
mix of cultural and historical influences. • BODY IMAGE is a person’s perception of the level of attractiveness of how his/her body or it can be somebody’s own impression of how his or her body looks. 2 types of beauty: I. Inner beauty- inner qualities of a person II. External beauty- physical characteristics of a person. 2.1 THE ROLE OF CULTURE IN OUR UNDERTSANDING OF “BODY IMAGE” AND “SELF-ESTEEM” 2.1a THE INFLUENCE OF MEDIA ON THE ADOLESCENT’S UNDERSTANDING OF BEAUTY • Genesis M. Javellina (2014) mentions that the media plays a large role in how teenagers view themselves by shaping images of what teenagers are supposed to be or do. 2.1b IMPACT OF MEDIA ON SELF-ESTEEM OF ADOLESCENT • Evidence is accumulating that repeated exposure to media direct or indirect pressures from media to be thin constitute risk factors for body dissatisfaction, concern on weight and disordered eating behaviors in adolescent girls and young women. 2.2 SELF-ESTEEM AND IN SIGNIFICANCE • Sometimes called self- worth or self- respect • Too little self-esteem • To much self-esteem • Vs. balanced self-esteem 2.2a THE CONCEPT OF SELF- ESTEEM • SELF-ESTEEM used to describes person’s overall sense of self worth or personal value. Moreover, it is how much you appreciate and like yourself. • Self-esteem can involve a variety of beliefs about yourself, such as appraisal of your own appearance, beliefs, emotion and behaviors. • Self-esteem and inner self-respect must be fulfilled in order for an individual to grow as a person and achieve self-actualization. 2.2b DEVELOPING SELF-ESTEEM 1. Talk back to media and speak our dissatisfaction with the focus on appearance: 2. De-emphasize numbers as pounds, kilogram or inches, feet and meters on the scale; they don’t tell us anything meaningful about the body as a whole or our health. 3. Stop comparing yourself with others and remember each one is unique. 4. appreciate and enjoy our bodies in the uniqueness of what we have; 5. spend time with people who have healthy relationship. 6. basing our happiness on how we look is likely to lead us to failure and frustration and may therefore prevent us from finding true happiness. 7. Broaden our perspective about health and beauty. 8. Recognize that size prejudice is a form of discrimination, as shape and size can’t indicate character, morality, intelligence or success. 9. Approach health and well-being from a firm and socially engaging perspective and put importance on a healthy lifestyle. 10.Keep in mind that the body, in whatever shape or size, is good and sacred having been created in the image and likeness of God. Such body deserves love and respect. ANY QUESTIONS?
