Prof. LeCompte
Cannabinoids are chemical
compounds found in the cannabis
plant. The two most well-known are
THC, responsible for the "high," and
CBD, which doesn't produce a high
and has potential therapeutic
properties. There are other
cannabinoids, like CBN, CBG, CBC, What are
and THCV, each with different
effects and potential medical uses.
cannabinoids?
These compounds interact with the
endocannabinoid system in the
human body, which regulates various
processes like pain, mood, and
appetite.
Cannabis History
1.Ancient Use (circa 500 BCE): Ancient civilizations
in China and India used cannabis for medicinal and
recreational purposes.
2.19th Century: British physician William B.
O'Shaughnessy introduced cannabis to Western
medicine.
3.1930s: The U.S. introduced cannabis regulation with
the Marihuana Tax Act, marking the start of prohibition.
4.1960s-70s: Counterculture popularized cannabis, and
THC was isolated.
5.1980s: Discovery of the endocannabinoid system in
the human body.
6.1996: California legalized medical cannabis,
triggering a wave of similar laws.
7.2000s: Research on therapeutic cannabinoids,
especially CBD, expanded.
8.2010s-Present: Global legalization, cannabis industry
growth, and ongoing scientific exploration of
cannabinoids.
Cannabinoids, like THC and CBD, offer potential medical benefits,
including:
1.Pain relief
2.Anti-inflammatory effects
3.Epilepsy management
4.Anxiety and depression reduction
Medical 5.Nausea and vomiting control
6.Appetite stimulation

Benefits 7.Glaucoma symptom relief

8.Neuroprotection
9.Sleep improvement
10.Support for PTSD, multiple sclerosis, and cancer-related symptoms.
However, their use should be guided by healthcare professionals due to
varying effectiveness and safety profiles.
Cannabis
Cultivation
Cannabis cultivation involves growing
cannabis plants for various purposes.
Key steps include selecting the right
strain, providing the right environment
(indoor, outdoor, or greenhouse),
ensuring proper lighting, nutrients, and
watering, managing pests and
diseases, and eventually harvesting the
mature plants. Compliance with legal
regulations is crucial, and quality
control checks should be performed
post-harvest.
Consumption
Methods
Common methods for consuming
cannabinoids include:

1. Smoking: Inhaling the smoke from

burning cannabis.
2. Vaping: Heating cannabis without
combustion for inhalation.
3. Edibles: Consuming cannabis-
infused food or beverages.
4. Tinctures: Liquid extracts taken
under the tongue.
5. Topicals: Creams and lotions
applied to the skin.
6. Capsules and Pills: Pre-measured
doses taken orally.

Abstract:
Research team led by Hiep Lu at the Agriculture and Food (2023) report that
cannabis sativa contains valuable cannabinoids, and alkaline leaching could
replace conventional alcohol leaching in the cannabis industry.

Abstract:
This study aimed to examine cannabis use patterns and differences in cannabinoid profiles
during symptomatic and asymptomatic periods in participants with suspected cannabinoid
hyperemesis syndrome, finding that there were differences in metabolites but not the parent
compound, and that most participants reported frequent cannabis use and experienced
withdrawal symptoms.
