Open Document Architecture

Multimedia Document
• A multimedia document is a document comprised of
information coded in at least one continuous(time-
dependent) medium and in one discrete (time-
independent) medium.

• Integration of different media is given through a close

relation between information units,called as
synchronization.
• A multimedia document is closely related to its
environment of tools, data abstractions basic concepts
and document architecture.
Document Architecture
• A document structure describes all the
connections among the individual
elements represented as models,e.g.
-Representation model
-Manipulation model
-Presentation model
Representation model
• The protocols for exchanging the information
among different computers
• The formats for storing the data
• Includes the relation between the individual
information elements which needs to be
considered during presentation
Manipulation model
• Describes all the operations allowed for
creation,change and deletion of multimedia
information
Presentation model
• How document is to be formed using various
elements of multimedia.

Manipulation of Multimedia data
• Tools for manipulation of multimedia documents such as
editors, desktop publishing and other text processing
programs are available.
• A document goes through a processing ,from the
information to presentation.
• Information included in a document belongs to a certain
document type ,e.g. a business letter or internal
memorandum.
• The transformation from the actual information to its final
representation behaves according to rules specific to the
document architecture.

Processing of a document
Cont..
• The presentation of multimedia document will
have final and executable too
• Final representation (exchange format is very
important in distributed ,heterogeneous system
environment
• The exchange format for interactive multimedia
presentation is called MHEG(Multimedia and
Hypermedia Information Coding Expert Group)
Hypermedia and Hypertext
• Reading a document is an act of reconstructing
knowledge. In the case of hypermedia and hypertext
media, a graphical structure is possible in a document
which may simplify the writing and reading process.

Problem description
Information transmission
In an ideal case knowledge transmission starts with
an author and ends with a reconstruction of the same
ideas by a reader.

Frequency Domain Analysis
• Frequency domain is a term used to
describe the analysis of
mathematical functions or signals with
respect to frequency.
Cont..

A time-domain graph shows how a signal changes over

time, whereas a frequency-domain graph shows how much
of the signal lies within each given frequency band over a
range of frequencies. A frequency-domain representation
can also include information on the phase shift that must be
applied to each sinusoid in order to be able to recombine
the frequency components to recover the original time
signal.
Cont..

The frequency domain relates to the Fourier transform or

Fourier series by decomposing a function into an infinite or
finite number of frequencies. This is based on the concept
of Fourier series that any waveform can be expressed as a
sum of sinusoids (sometimes infinitely many.)
