More than any other issue in political philosophy, Rousseau addresses freedom in his writings. He tries to explain why a
man in the state of nature enjoys almost absolute freedom. This complete independence exists for two reasons. The
natural man is physically free because he is not dominated by other men or restrained by a piece of repressive state
machinery. Second, he is psychologically and spiritually free because he is not held captive by any of the fabricated
requirements that define contemporary society. The freedom from necessity, the second kind of freedom, is a notably
original and ground-breaking aspect of Rousseau's theory. Rousseau felt that all types of societal evils, from exploitation
and dominance, were caused by modern man's enslavement to his own needs.
As part of his contrast between contemporary society and the natural world, Rousseau offers a study of human needs. The
passions that cause people to seek an item or activity, in Rousseau's view, are the source of "needs." In nature, a person's
requirements are severely limited to those that are necessary for their existence and ability to reproduce, such as food,
sleep, and sex. The wants of males, however, increase as collaboration and the division of labor take root in contemporary
society and expand to encompass a wide range of non-essentials, including friends, amusement, and opulent commodities.
These requirements become necessities as time passes and they are more and more a part of daily life. Men in
contemporary society have a variety of desires, many of which are initially enjoyable and even beneficial to humans.
As what have Jean-Jacques Rousseau. This has created a ruckus in me for in my experience I don’t want to be chained up
and be controlled like a robot therefore I want to be free like a bird.
