A research question is a fundamental
element of both quantitative and
qualitative research, and it is the
question that a research project sets out
to answer. Mattick, et al. (2018).

HRD
ADVANCE QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
According to Mattick, et al., (2018). When developing a research question, there are
several key criteria to consider:

1. Focused: The research question should be focused on a single problem or issue.

2. Researchable: It should be feasible to answer using primary and/or secondary sources.
3. Specific and well-defined: All the terms used in the research question should have clear meanings,
and vague language, jargon, and too-broad ideas should be avoided.
4. Relevant to a timely social or academic debate: The question should aim to contribute to an
existing and current debate in the field or in society at large.
5. Analytical rather than descriptive: The research question should allow for the production of an
analysis of an issue or problem rather than a simple description of it.
In addition, a strong research question should be developed based on initial reading around the
topic and should address a problem or gap in the existing knowledge in the field or discipline.

HRD
ADVANCE QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
It is important to ensure that the research question is not too
difficult to answer, is researchable, and is analytical rather than
descriptive. McCombes, S. (2023, October 26).

The question should be specific enough to be well covered in the

available space and should not have a simple yes/no answer,
requiring research and analysis. George Mason University Writing
Center. (2008).

Problem Awareness:
- What is the problem?
- How did you become aware of the problem?
- Why is it important to find a solution for it?
- What are the possible solutions for it?
- What has so far been done about it?
- What remains to be done?
- What am I specifically going to do about it?

HOW TO BEGIN/MAKE A RESEARCH QUESTION/S?
• RP / RQs begins with:
- What, How, Why, Where, When
- Is, Are
- Do, Does, Did

HOW IS THE LOGICAL PROGRESSION OF A RESEARCH QUESTIONS?

- Specific problems in numerals
- Sub specific problem
- Logical sequencing

Statement of the Problem
SAMPLE
There is a severe overcrowding problem in Manila City Jails as a direct result of increased policing and
arrests of suspected law violators. The main purpose of this study is to assess the implementation of
Therapeutic Community Program for PDL in Manila City Jail and also to examine the rate of PDL re-
offenders. The pursuance of this objective is to seek answer to the following specific problems:
1. What is the level of effectiveness of the Therapeutic Community (TC) program at Manila City Jail
(MCJ), in terms of the following:
1.1 Behavioral Aspect ;
1.2 Psychological Aspect ;
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
1.3 Spiritual Aspect; and
1.4 Skills Development Aspect?
2. What are the barriers to successful implementation of the TC program against re-offending at MCJ?
3. What are the roles of peer support in the TC program in addressing re-offending at MCJ?

WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF RP/RQS?
• Writing a statement of the problem should help you clearly
identify the purpose of the research project you will propose.
Often, the statement of the problem will also serve as the basis
for the introductory section of your final proposal, directing your
reader’s attention quickly to the issues that your proposed
project will address and providing the reader with a concise
statement of the proposed project itself.

• A statement of problem need not be long and elaborate: one

page is more than enough for a good statement of problem.

Stating the Research
Setting
The research setting is a crucial aspect of any research
project, as it provides the context within which the research
question is formulated and addressed. It encompasses the
environment, conditions, and parameters within which the
research is conducted.

HRD

Key points about the research setting based on the provided search results:

1. Definition: The research setting refers to the specific

environment, conditions, and parameters within which the
research is conducted.

2. Role: It provides the context for the research question,

guiding the formulation and direction of the study.

HRD

3. Influence: The research setting can influence the type of data
that can be collected, the methods that can be used, and the
overall outcomes of the research.

4. Considerations: When stating the research setting, it is

important to consider factors such as the population being studied,
the geographical location, the time period, and any relevant
external influences that may impact the research.

5. Relevance: The research setting is essential for ensuring that

the research question is specific, well-defined, and relevant to the
social or scholarly issue being addressed
