NERVOUS

SYSTEM
WHAT IS NERVOUS SYSTEM ?
• The nervous system is a complex collection of nerves and specialized cells
known as neurons- transmit signals between different parts of the body
• It is like the body's electrical wiring.
• Structurally, the nervous system has two components: the central nervous
system and the peripheral nervous system
• It is made up of the brain, the spinal cord and nerves.
• The peripheral nervous system consists of sensory neurons, ganglia (clusters
of neurons) and nerves that connect to one another and to the central nervous
system.
THE FUNCTIONS

• The nervous system performs three main functions : sensory, integrative and
motor
• The sensory function involves the sensory receptors. The sensory receptors
detect stimuli from both the internal and external environments and initiates
the nerve impulses. ( information to central nervous system, CNS)
• The integrative function- CNS processes and integrates the information.
( analyzing and then make suitable decision for responses)
• The motor function- motor commands from the CNS are transmitted to the
effectors to carry out the responses
THE NEURONES
• The nervous system is made up of millions of nerve cells called neurons.
• A typical neurone has four distinct parts
a) Dendrites
b) Cell body
c) The axon
d) The synaptic terminals (synaptic knobs)
• In my next presentation, I will continue with more detail about the
transmission of information across synapses (with the help of
neurotransmitters) and the voluntary & involuntary actions that happen
