PATTERNS OF LEXICAL STYLISTIC DEVICES

 Interplay of different types of lexical meaning;


 Intensification of characteristic traits of the
phenomena described;
 Intentional mixing of word of different stylistic
aspects.

The following classification of lexical stylistic devices
is suggested by I.R.Galperin:
 stylistic devices based on interaction of primary dictionary and
contextually imposed meanings: metaphor, metonymy, irony;
 stylistic devices based on interaction of primary dictionary and
derivative logical meanings: zeugma and pun;
 stylistic devices based on interaction o f logical and emotive
meanings: epithet, oxymoron, hyperbole;
 a stylistic device based on interaction o f logical and nominal
meanings: antonomasia.

METAPHOR

 He is not a man, he is just a machine.


 The leaves fell sorrowfully.
 Some books are to be tasted, others swallowed.

METONYMY

 The pen is mightier than the sword.


 I had a word with him.
 They came in. Two of them, a man with long fair moustaches and
a silent dark man. The moustaches and I had nothing in common.

 Science-fiction novels were his constant companions.

 My alarm clock yells at me to get out of bed every morning.
