IDIOMS • derived from the ancient Greek word "IDIOMA"
which means "Peculiar Phraseology".

• special collocations of meaning which


cannot be determined from the meanings of
the elements/words that male them up.

• the meaning of the idiom has to be


learnt as that of an individual lexical
item.

TYPES OF IDIOMS
1. PURE IDIOM are idioms where the components of
the phrase bear no literal
resemblance to the meaning of the
phrase. This often what people think
of when they think of idioms.
Examples:
• Spill the beans/tea.
• Break a leg.
• It's raining cats and dogs.
• When pigs fly.
2. BINOMIAL IDIOMor binomial expression, are
phrases that include two
words that may be
opposites, usually joined by
"and" or "or".
Examples:
• hot and cold (opposites)
• peace and quiet (synonyms)
• meet and greet (rhyming or similar
sounding word)
• again and again ( repetition)
• tried and tested (alliteration)
3. PARTIAL IDIOM this idiom is one that's been
shortened into one part, with the
second part generally being
understood by fluent speaks.
EXAMPLES:

create a verb with a
distinct meaning.
