INTRODUCTION
Concrete is the main material in the construction field. Concrete is a
mixture of cement , sand and coarse aggregates. Nowadays river
sand is used for all construction purposes.
 This required sand is taken from river beds. Eventually , the river
depths will increase and it will be a threat to the environment.
Millions of tons of waste glass is generated annually all over the
world. Glass powder and sand are principally composed of silica.
In this case I am going to use glass powder as river sand.

RESEARCH AIM
To determine suitability of glass powder as a partial replacement
for sand of concrete.

4
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
To study the properties of glass powder with concrete.
To examine the strength of concrete with glass powder with respect to the
standard concrete.
 To provide a suitable volume ratio to replace sand by glass powder.

LITERATURE REVIEW
According to the results obtained by M.Adaway and Y.Wang , the optimum replacing percentage of glass
powder is 30% . As well an increment of compressive strength with the addition of glass powder up to
30%. According to this research identified that glass particles size is finer than 1.18 mm . One crucial
finding from this research has been that glass colour has no influence on concrete properties.
But according to the research done by Dr. M.Vijaya Sekhar Reddy, grade 20 has been tested. Sand was
replaced in ratios of 10%,20% and 30% by waste glass. After 28 days of curing, the 20% sample has shown
an increament of compressive strength by 30%. And the 30% sample has shown a compressive sstrength
increase by 8.5% after 28 days of curing. Workability of the concrete with glass is higher than the control
concrete. When the weight of the concrete specimen is considered, the weight of the glass concrete is less
than the control concrete.
With respect to the research performed by Mohammad Iqbal Malik ,Aarif Mansoor, Barkat Ahmed , Syed
Asima and Muzafar Bashir , the compressive strength was has shown a 30% increment at 7 days of age of
30% replacement. And 25% increment of compressive strength after 28 days. therefore, the optimum
replacement is recommended to be as 27% when more glass powder is added, the workability has
increased as well as the water absorption has decreased. Mostly important, this concrete is financially
efficient because the waste glass is free cost.

METHODOLOGY
Referring the research papers done before on glass powder to study about
the properties of glass powder.
Performing the slump test and the cube crushing test to examine the strength
• Collection of materials.
• Crushing the waste glass.
• Make concrete.
• Do the slump test and make cubes (150mm x 150 mm x 150mm)
• Curing the cubes.
• Test on concrete by crushing test.
• Analysis and discussion.
