DISCUSSION
What is a Group Discussion?
 A group discussion is a structured conversation where participants express
their opinions, arguments, and ideas on a specific topic. Unlike traditional
one-on-one debates, group discussions involve multiple participants who
contribute to the conversation. It's a forum for individuals to exchange views,
present arguments, and engage with each other's points of view. It requires
effective communication skills, critical thinking, and the ability to listen and
respond to others' points of view.
 The purpose of a group discussion is to bring together diverse perspectives
and ideas, encourage active listening and participation, and facilitate
problem-solving and decision-making. It is often used in educational and
professional settings to promote critical thinking, collaboration, and
communication skills.
Types of Group Discussions
 Moderated Group discussions-
 typically structured and moderated by an external force (adjudicators, OC
members, etc). Before speaking, permission needs to be taken.

 Unmoderated group discussions –

 are more casual and open-ended. There is a free flow of discussion and anyone
can speak or counter as they wish.
Preparation for Group Discussion
 RESEARCH YOUR TOPIC
 Before the discussion, it is important to research and gather information about the
topic at hand. This will help you contribute to the conversation and provide
valuable insights.
 PREPARE YOUR THOUGHTS
 Take some time to think about your own perspective on the topic and what points
you want to make during the discussion. This will help you stay focused and
contribute meaningfully to the conversation.
 BRING RELEVANT MATERIAL
 If there are any relevant materials that could contribute to the discussion, such as
articles or research papers, bring them with you to the meeting. This will help
support your points and provide additional context for the conversation.
Tips for Group Discussion

 Speak clearly and concisely

 When it is your turn to speak, make sure you speak clearly and concisely. Avoid
rambling or going off-topic and try to get your point across succinctly.
 Listen actively
 Pay attention to what others are saying and show that you are listening by
nodding or making eye contact. Avoid interrupting others and wait for your turn
to speak.
 Stay on topic
 Try to keep the discussion focused on the topic at hand. If the conversation
starts to stray off-topic, gently steer it back to the main point.
 Respect others' opinions
 Everyone has the right to their own opinion, even if you disagree with it. Avoid
attacking others or their ideas and try to find common ground where possible .
 Make sure to not use any kind of unparliamentary language, and there should be
no mention of religion, gender, caste, etc.
